Just as Emma discovered several years back, mulberries can be foraged in abundance at this time of year. We've discovered that we have a mulberry tree in our very own backyard and there are several across the street at a university building that's vacated for summer. Needless to say, we're flush with this fruit and looking for things to do with it:
So, we culled through the comments on related posts here at The Kitchn and searched the web far and wide and compiled these ideas (for ourselves and for any of you who may find yourselves with lots of mulberries, too!):
• Flavored rum: Soak them in rum for a month.
• Mulberry-orange muffins via Pleasant House
• Mulberry-thyme ice cream (Or just use the berries as a topping over vanilla ice cream.)
• Make granita!
• Mulberry cheesecake via Passionate about Baking
• Morat: a mead of honey, mulberries and spices
• Mix them with sour cream (or greek yogurt) and put a little honey on top.
• Baby Spinach & Mulberry Salad in Maple Vinaigrette
• Make raw cookies like Mulberry Balls.
• Make mulberry syrup.

Love posts on foraging! Would love to see more here. Watch for soil problems in developed areas; the soil can have lead and other contaminants (sunflowers, spinach, etc will remove lead but the plants are inedible in the meantime).
they're pretty good in any recipe that calls for almost any berry. when i was growing up we used to bake them into muffins and a "summer cake". My brother and I also used to climb high into the branches and gorge ourselves. haha.
There is a huge mulberry tree at my community garden - I obviously snack on a few each time I go down there to weed, water, etc, but last year, I decided to make Mulberry Merlot sorbet with them - recipe here.
I made mine with more wi me than listed in my recipe.... Good and boozy, but still with a bright berry flavor :)
We LOVE our mulberry trees. So do our chickens! One of them leans over the chicken yard & they sit underneath it, gobbling them up as they fall in the am.
We just discovered a mulberry tree growing over our fence and covered with fruit! What an unexpected treat:) The mulberry thyme ice cream sounds wonderful.
Watch those berries closely. I picked a bunch a few years back that were at their height of freshness, and thankfully I checked one out before popping it into my mouth, because it was teeming with tiny red mites.
@Karrey...ewww mites?? didnt you wash them first?? Oh the thought of "teeming with tiny red mites" gives me the hibbly jibblies. Anyway....Mulberry lemonade...mulberry tea...mulberry ice cream...use them in salads....eat them with cheese....so many ideas!
I had 10 mulberry trees in my backyard, making summers heaven. They were covered with tiny ants, but a good soaking floated them off the fruit. With gallons collected year after year, the only challenge was what to do with them all.
I love mulberry season. Didn't get far enough to bake them this year, but ate handfuls! Thank you for the mention!!
do y'all normally leave the stems in or take them out? they're the hardest thing to deal with in regards to mulberries...i normally take a pair of tweezers to them.
