It slices and dices! Wait, there's more! Well, who wouldn’t be tempted by a knife that can cut through a tin can and still slice a tomato? Or a tool that chops onions without tears? But the real question is have you ever actually bought something you saw advertised in an infomercial on TV?
While I can’t say I’ve ever “picked up the phone and called,” I’ve been mighty curious about some of these products. These commercials are kitschy, no question, but I’ve always wondered if some of the products might work as well as they say. As someone who doesn’t sharpen her knives as often as she should, that old ginsu knife has particular appeal.
Do any of you have first-hand experience with these infomercial kitchen products?

Martha Concrete Lam...

The Sham Wow. It was so cheap, I just had to.
I bought it in a store though, not ordered from TV, if that makes a difference.
the only thing I ever ordered from the tv infomercial was a set of workout dvds that were supposed to be $69. The next day my credit card was billed for 2 separate charges..one for $69 and the other for $279. When I called the company to try and figure it out no one had an explanation and it took a HALF HOUR and a call to the credit card company to get the charges/orders cancelled. NEVER again.
My roommate bought the Magic Bullet from an infomercial. I laughed for about an hour when I found out. It works well for whipping up smoothies but other than that it's garbage.
My huband bought me the "Miracle Blade" knives when we were poor college students and I was constantly complaining about the cheap-o grocery store knives in our apartment. They were definitely better than what we had, but really only good for slicing - not so great for chopping. It was such a sweet gesture that it took me 3 years to suggest that just maybe, since we had graduated and had decent paying jobs, we should consider buying real-deal, good-quality knives. Luckily he was on board, but we did hold on to the steak knives since they are insanely sharp and dishwasher safe.
The microwave bacon hanger cooker thing. It actually kicks ass. Everyone in my family has one.
i just googled "as seen on tv" and learned that there are 14 pages of kitchen-related items! i might consider "the perfect brownie pan" but the microwave pasta maker i'll pass on. the as-seen-on-tv thing i *really* want is not kitchen-related; i'm dying to try the shake weight!
I think my mom bought a hot dog cooking tray and/or the microwave bacon cooker. We no longer use it.
I've never bought any of these things (I don't think...), but I wanted to send out a word of warning to those considering it. If you actually call in, the people who you talk to will not know anything about the product other than what is on their scripts, and they are forced to try to sell you all sorts of other things that may or may not be related to what you called about. You will have to say "no" over and over again to bypass these offers. I should know, I used to answer those calls as a summer job. ick! But by all means pick up as-seen-on-tv items in a store. :)
The Egg-o-wave. Yes I had insomnia. Worst kitchen disaster ever. Though it has a vent, egg proteins can seal that vent up just as well for explosive consequences.
I have not, but I would TOTALLY get some Snuggies.
I have Shamwows and a "Perfect Pancake". The shamwows are awesome. The perfect pancake maker, may have been used once...
I've never actually seen an ad for them, but I love Debbie Meyer GreenBags. They work, I swear! My fruits and vegetables last much longer in the bags.
Oh yes. I bought a HUGE job lot of lock and locks from QVC after watching an infomercial on them. But they are brilliant! I could do my own infomercial on them now...
i've been tempted by the Titan Peeler. it's almost irresistible when they throw in two for the price of one!
My Dad bought us Ginsu knives 16 years ago and they are still sharp and work great! Also, my Mother in law bought the Titan peeler and gave us the freebie. Works great for julienne/chiffonade.
My mother in law is an absolute "as seen on TV" addict. So when she can't justify buying it for herself, she gets it for me "as a gift." I've gotten the Magic Bullet (that was actually the best one, we used it a bunch until the blade went dull); various Ronco appliances for cooking unhealthy meals, a whole passel of Sham Wows and even the Pancakes in a Can (or whatever it's called). Most of it goes directly in the trash and/or to Salvation Army. I really wish she would stop...
Only thing I can remember buying is a George Foreman Grill! I can't believe nobody else has mentioned it yet.
My mother, lord and lady bless here, is marginally addicted to crap like this. Those RonCo knife sets? She's got one... and those handles are cheap plastic that breaks easily. Slicer 'n dicer mandolins? Has had several over the years, all cheap and breakable. And that "Perfect" brownie pan? Even greasing each square with what feels like a pound of lard can't keep it from sticking.
Utter crap, all of it.
The Vidalia Chop Wizard! I LOVE it, I use it almost every day. That thing is AWESOME.
Yep, got the brownie pan with divider! I've had so much fun making all sorts of things with it!
I second the Vidalia Chop Wizard! Also, I like the Magic Bullet - it does little jobs quick with less cleanup. I bought them in stores, not on TV though.
No never! Others that have described the experience either admit to being ripped off or seem to have a pride or shame thing going on but nonetheless regrets. This suiff on the TV preys on... don't want to get into that but just don't do this to your self esteem. Try to be helpful to others that buy this stuff and urge them not to.
I bought a "snack master," which basically presses sandwiches into 2 triangular toasted pockets that are supposed to be sealed at the edges. I was also 6 years old at the time, but they let me order by myself anyway. It was a 'bill me later' arrangement. Didn't work very well.
My grandma bought a GT Express 101 and gave me the second one she got for free (call in the next ten minutes!). When I lived alone, I used it for everything. It makes great toasted wraps.

I'll admit I bought some Oxy-Clean stain remover, but it really does seem to work great. Although Oxy-clean is so ubiquitous these days that I don't think it really counts.
Oh! And I got a Snuggie as a gag gift but ended up actually loving it.
My boyfriend bought two dog snuggies, one for our dog and one for his sister's. Don't know if it exactly counts as "as-seen-on-tv," but word of warning: to place the order he had to give his phone number, and ever since doing so he started getting a slew of telemarketers and random solicitations. Now I'll never buy from "as-seen-on-tv."
Hey, don't knock a sandwich-maker/snack-master! I cook from scratch a lot, but when I'm tired, it's the laziest way to make grilled cheese.
Ha, a flip and fold! Although I didn't get it on TV, it was on the "as seen on TV" shelf at the store. It works wonderfully for the clothes folding impaired. ;-)
I had to hack down some shrubs, used the Ginzu knife I bought 15 years ago and the next day used the knife to slicce tomatoes.
Oxyclean is great, as is the Snuggy. Green bags need to be washed between loads, because you don't want your carrots to taste like broccoli.
proactiv!
it was pretty good.
These responses are great! Officially my favorite comments section all week.
I own both the Magic Bullet and the George Foreman Grill. I used the Magic Bullet a ton the first several months I had it. I used the George Foreman Grill only occasionally. Both were gifts that were bought from a store, not from a commercial.
I did buy a set of workout DVDs from TV once, though. The collection was called Turbo Jam. I used those DVDs a lot and still go back to them occasionally.
I don't call to buy, because we have an "as seen on tv" store at the mall. We bought Magic Bullet years ago. And it still is the most useful gadget in the kitchen. And Monkey Hooks for hanging pictures on the drywall. Work great.
We also got an Oreck steam cleaner.
@JaimeP- I also had the Miracle Blades, and I still do use the steak knives, and the bread slicer. It also came with a free juicer, which... hey, why not.
i bought the ginsu knives set 10 years ago and they are still going strong.. i've bought expensive knives since then but i keep reaching for the ginsu over and over again. maybe i got too used to it?
"As Seen On TV" items are a Christmas staple at home. Every year we buy at least on item from the "As Seen On TV" store and test out the infomercial on Christmas morning. The ShamWOW is almost as good as the infomercial suggests, the Magic Bullet is good but doesn't last long if you make a lot of smoothies, KaBoom and OxyClean work but aren't any better than regular cleaners, the tupperware caddy is tiny as are the containers it comes with, and I'm not sure about the Mighty Putty since we haven't really found something to use it on.
Hell what haven't I bought ..
Magic Bullet - great for puree.. the rest not so much. wouldn't buy if i had a choice.
Slap Chop - useful .. easy to clean, would buy again.
Big City Slider Station - pain in the ass, scoop broke, handle burns big hands.
Perfect Brownie Pan - works with a ton of PAM or else sticks. would not re-buy
Flavor Injector - useless
Smart Spin Storage System.. havent used um since.
Miracle Blade - actually got handed a set, great if they are free..
Titan Peeler - awesome .. buy 2
I know there's more but i cant think of um at the moment ..
I had one of those orange plastic V-slicer mandolines, once. A long time ago, when I was young and naive. Never could get it to work on potatoes like they did on the commercial. Owning it helped hone my cynical edge about such things.
I have a Magic Bullet.
One too many times making hummus has rendered it useless (the plastic housing that runs the blade has stripped almost completely off).
While I don't have a Sham-Wow, I have the other brand that's the same thing. I spend $20 at the Minnesota State Fair every year and get one. They're quite useful.
I bought the Furminator (pet brush) from a store. It really does work! And I really do brush off a pile of fur, just like the commercial.
cupandpenny.tumblr.com
I bought the Smart Stack storage containers because a friend had them and loved them. They're great! Each container is the same width, just varying depth, so the lids are the same for all of them.
I was given a Vidalia onion cutter as a gift; it really is wonderful. I use it all the time; wouldn't be without it. I was also given a set of Ginsu knives; they aren't bad either.
Where I live, there is an As Seen On TV store in the mall - I tend to browse it occasionally and have been tempted to pick up a few things. The fiance got me a snuggie one year but I think I only used it once.
DO NOT get the perfect pan for brownies. They do not come out well they stick to the pan, and it is a pain to clean. Terrible purchase.
See if you can download Steve Goodman's song VEGEMATIC. It's a riot.
I have the Debbie Meyer GreenBags. I didn't actually order them on TV - I got them at BB&B, but they say "as seen on TV" on them. They are AWESOME - they save my CSA produce for much longer than it would otherwise last, which is especially useful if you get a ton of something one week and can't finish it.
I also used to have a George Foreman grill in college, which came in really handy for stove-less cooking.
