What did we find at the farmers' market this morning? Everything we love about summer: juicy tomatoes and peaches, bright yellow squash, a perfect plum for jam, and some funny-looking zucchini...
We shopped at the 97th Street market today, and the vendors were bursting with good stuff. These 8-ball zucchini were new to us (but so cute!). We assume they taste the same as long, skinny ones, but the sign is right: They're the perfect shape for stuffing.
Last summer, we were overwhelmed with these yellow sugar plums from our CSA, and we ended up making this Peach, Plum, and Ginger Jam- delicious.
As for the peaches... is there any better summer fruit? The sign above one table said "Set on the table for one day, then eat over the sink." If ours make it past one day, we're making this. Peach is by far our favorite flavor of cobbler.
We also saw a vendor with okra, which we didn't buy this trip but hope we see again soon.
What summer produce are you eating this weekend?

Blueberry pancakes for breakfast tomorrow morning! And then probably peach-blueberry cobbler at some point over the weekend (if I don't eat all the peaches first... ; ) Oh, and something yet-to-be-determined with that brilliant yellow squash and some new potatoes. (Any suggestions?)
I went a little crazy at the City Hall Park Greenmarket this morning...
8 peaches, 2 quarts of sour cherries, and 4 pints of blueberries.
I think I need to make pie. or peach blueberry cobbler.
the cherries are going into another large bottle of maraschino liquor.
we're into all the different varieties of stone fruits - plouts, apricots, peaches and a plumcot(?). i was actually wondering if anyone knew the difference between a pluot and a plumcot.
and we love the little eight-ball squashes. they are perfect for roasting and stuffing with a little rice, grain roast and mozzarella. yum.
we're growing loads of eight ball in our garden right now. they are so easy...and everyone is always impressed at how they look!
The Hermiston watermelon lady showed up at the market this morning with vine-ripe, super sweet melons and cantalopes...40c/lb. The first of the local freestone peaches appeared at 75c/lb. oh yum. I picked up striped Italian zucchini and butterstick yellow squash for dinner. These will taste wonderful in tonights steamed veggies and meat dish. I love fresh peaches and yogurt.
In Boulder, CO we have passed cherry season and are on to the peaches. They were bountiful coming from the western slope of our state and delicious. I saw 8-ball zucchini and thought of your post. Green beans are in abundance as well and I picked up two pounds. The hearty green leafy veggies are doing well in the heat, but lettuces are not doing so well (things I know from my own garden).
