Do you remember IKEA's colorful kitchen backsplashes from a few seasons ago? What looked at the time to be elaborate tile or mosaic patterns was actually just IKEA fabric hung behind plexiglass! Since then this idea has popped up around the internet as one DIY backsplash solution for rental kitchens.
We know backsplashes can get messy if you do a lot of cooking, hence the reason for the plexiglass. The plexiglass protects the fabric and makes the backsplash easy to wipe clean. You can usually find plexiglass at hardware or art supply stores, and have it cut to size for you.
Have you ever done this? If so, share your experiences!

Straw Mat from The ...

Love this idea! I've been thinking about my kitchen backsplash for over 10 years and the cost and the permanence issue has always stopped me short. I have almost decided on reverse painting glass and then this comes up! Plexiglass could happen a lot faster and if I don't like the fabric, it is changeable!
How would you hang the Plexiglas? Or do you just cut it to fit and ... shove it in there? Haha. My (rental) kitchen backsplash is already a strange painted metal (not conducive to nails or screws... in fact, I would probably get charged for putting holes in it). Any suggestions?
I was wondering the same thing as schwed. How does it work?
Same thing, how do you hang it?
I have this weird tile back splash in my rental kitchen, that is actually about a half inch out from the wall in one area (very old house) and I can't think how to cover it without taking it out or it looking terrible.
If I knew how to hang the plexiglass I might be able to use this as an alternative to those crappy stick-on tiles or some weird painting method that might not work.
Thanks!
last I checked plexiglass is pretty stinking expensive. maybe I was looking at stuff that's too thick.
I wonder if these are "stuck" vs "hung". Like maybe with some of those temporary 3m strips that go with the hooks (the ones that release when stretched down).
Neat idea! If people are thinking that "Plexiglas" is too spendy, don't look for the brand name (you know, it's the Kleenex vs. tissues, thing). I just looked up "acrylic sheets" on Home Depot's website, and came up with a 12 x 24 panel that is less than $15. Price is right for me-- gonna get some cool fabric remnants and whip something up this weekend!
