It goes without saying if you regularly read this column you like to mix up drinks for most any occasion, so why not one for election night? Perhaps you waited until the last minute to decide how you'll cast your ballot and need a sip for pondering, or maybe you just want to toast the fact that the whole thing is finally over. Either way the El Presidente cocktail is the perfect pick for this week's happy hour.
The history of this drink dates back to heyday of Old Havana when Americans under Prohibition went in search of rum and some fun in the sun. A jaunt down to Cuba delivered a dose of both. The name itself and the fact that it's delicious, makes it ideal for any election night party, or a simple toast to your candidate of choice. So get to stirring for a very happy happy hour in ten minutes time.
El Presidente Cocktail
1 ounce light rum
1 ounce dry vermouth
1 teaspoon grenadine
1 teaspoon curaçao
Twist of orange peel
Marashino cherry garnish
In a tall glass filled with cracked ice, add rum and vermouth.
Add grenadine and curaçao, stir and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
Twist orange peel over the glass so that the oil floats on the surface of the drink. Drop orange peel in, along with maraschino cherry.
