Maybe sandwiches aren't the first things that come to mind when you think of "gourmet food," but then again, we're not talking about your average PB&J. We're talking paninis with summer pesto, homemade rye piled high with artisan cured beef, ciabatta layered with local cheeses. Yes, with the right ingredients, a sandwich can be quite gourmet indeed.
• Tuscan Tuna-and-Bean Sandwiches from Gourmet - Made with pantry staples, but oh-so-classy.
• Crisp Tofu Sandwich with Peanut-Ginger Sauce from Martha Stewart - A simple sauce takes this vegetarian sandwich to another level of awesome.
• Reuban-ish Sandwich from Jamie Oliver - Deli food at home is looking really good right now.
• Merguez Ficelle Sandwich from Real Simple - This sausage and onion sandwich doesn't need much more than mustard to make it perfect.
• BLT Fried Egg and Cheese Sandwich from Food & Wine - What is it about fried eggs that makes everything so good?
• Grilled Cheese and Short Rib Sandwiches from Bon Appétit - Not that short ribs need much by way of improvement, but the caramelized onions and arugula on this sandwich sound divine.
• Pressed Italian Sandwiches from Sunset Magazine and MyRecipes - It's all about the ciabatta, folks.
• Chile-Marinated Pork on Cemita Rolls from Epicurious - The extra effort to make the pork for these sandwiches will be well worth it.
• Fromage Blanc, Banana, and Membrillo Sandwiches from Saveur - Direct from San Francisco's Tartine Bakery to our stomachs.
What's your idea of a truly gourmet sandwich?

I love sandwiches! They're truly underrated. Thanks for this post!
The BLT/fried egg sandwich was featured in the movie Spanglish - watch it!
Yeah, I love sandwiches too--a BLT plus something (fried egg or avocado or guacamole are favorites) is a favorite dinner for just my husband and me on one of those nights in where we're going out of our way to do something really fun.
@kaylaps It is! It is! And in the DVD, there is an extra with Thomas Keller teaching Adam Sandler how to make the sandwich. We've made it several times. We call it the Spanglish sandwich. So good, oh so very good.
Oooh, a fried egg immediately elevates a dish in my book! Be'wiched (Mpls) serves a great house-cured pastrami & fried egg sandwich with roasted peppers and harissa on foccacia.
But my new obsession is lamb prosciutto I simply sandwich between two slices of buttered rye.
There are so many amazing vegetarian sammies out there. I wish you guys would have featured more.
I make one with home-made tomato-chilli jam (it's more like chutney in consistency) and bacon. It's an amazing match. I also like to make a ciabatta based sandwich with hummus for spread topped with sun-dried tomato and grilled courgette and red pepper.
The fromage Blanc, banana, and membrillo sandwich sounds intriguing... hmm... Is membrillo sweet?
A simple fried egg sandwich is made amazing when you add fresh basil.
Some great recipes here - I love tuna sandwiches - but I would have enjoyed some more vegetarian sandwich recipes.
All a sandwich needs is a ciabatta roll. Mmm...
I was recently a guest of some folks who put out a huge brunch spread that included fresh strawberries, whipped topping mixed with yoghurt (divine), and mini ciabatta rolls. I made strawberry shortcake style sandwiches and may never go back to using angel food cake!
A few vegetarian options...
Roasted eggplant, tomatoes and onion with mozzarella and a basil pesto on ciabatta.
Smashed Garbanzo beans with garlic, lemon, cilantro, red onion, red bell pepper, avocado and tomato in a wrap. Some dried oregano and salt/pepper. Or don't smash them and serve as a salad. Add some cold rice for a more filling salad.
Roasted asparagus with carmelized shallots, garlic, reduced balsamic glaze and chopped basil on ciabatta.
