If you've ever been to an Open House weekend or other event at Donald Judd's Chinati Foundation, you'll know just how wonderful his oversized dining tables are. Be they indoors or out, there's plenty of room for gathering everyone around:
Made of simple lumber, Judd originally constructed his pine furniture with materials he could purchase easily at the hardware store. Now the tables live on at the Chinati Foundation, the museum he established in west Texas.
Since Judd made many of his pine wood tables himself, they're also great inspiration for making a large outdoor table of your own. The great advantage here is that you can make it any size and proportion that fits your outdoor entertaining space!
Have you been to the Chinati Foundation? Did you find any inspiration there for outdoor entertaining?

I need a table like that in my kitchen.
I've been to Chinati! All the furniture there is like that. Looks cool, but not comfy after a while. On the other hand, the open shelving (filled with blue and white enamel spatterware) in the Arena kitchen is my dream... sigh.
Chinati is a wonderland of art. I was there almost two years ago as a Lannan Foundation Writer in Residence during open house. Amazing stuff, those chairs were designed not to be slouched in. Up close the level of artistry and craftsmanship put into those tables is nothing short of genius. Marfa also has a terrific eatery called Cochineal, wonderful braised tripe!
