On a recent trip to Montreal, we stopped into our favorite all-tomato store, La Tomate. It's a small shop that has tomato everything - sauces, jellies, soups, and even tomato-filled chocolates!
We snapped up these two tubes of Tomato & Blueberry Spread and Sundried Tomato & Port Jelly. We love the convenience of these tubes; it's very easy to squeeze out the desired amount on a piece of bread, a cracker, or a piece of cheese.
Plus, there's no spoon or spreader to wash afterwards. Bonus: the tubes are made of aluminum, so they're recyclable.
This made us start thinking about what other food in tubes we had, so we checked our refrigerator when we got home. We discovered that we had a tube of wasabi, a tube of harissa, a tube of anchovy paste and a tube of chestnut puree.

thanks for this post -- i've been looking for tomato paste in a tube. i have a feeling it's easier to find than i think. any leads?
I haven't used tubed foods as ingredients yet. But when I lived in Portugal i used to buy a tube that was filled with a swirl of ketchup and mayo that was dynamite on hard boiled eggs. For those of you gagging right now I, too, thought the idea was nasty at best. But after manning up and trying it, i fell in love.
Tomato paste in the tube is very practical for home use. You can usually find it in the grocery store right there in the same aisle as the canned stuff.
Tomato paste and pesto paste...pretty standard, but this new brand (which I can't for the life of me remember right now), is actually quite good! I find myself adding it to all sorts of things since it's so convenient.
When I was in Valreas, France visiting a friend, I purchased a tube of eggplant paste. It was a great spread. Does anyone know where I can find that in L.A.? I would LOVE to know. Thanks.
My housemate has some awesome hungarian paprika thing in a tube. We don't know exactly what it is because there's no English on the tube, but apparently it's standard stuff in Hungary. We use it to flavor aioli.
I have tomato paste, pesto, and anchovy paste in tubes. We also just bought 4 tubes of peanut butter... but those are for training the dog. ;)
selena, I found tomato paste in a tube (Amore, I think) in Amazon.com's grocery section, but beware, it's in bulk--something like 12 tubes.
Hmm ... where exactly in Montreal is this place? I can't figure it out from their web site and would like to visit!
selena, I've found tubes of tomato paste for super cheap at Whole Foods, if you've got one near you.
I bought a tube of anchovy paste, but it just isn't the same. It smells strange and lacks the "anchovy-ness" of real anchovies.
Do ingredients in tubes last longer on average?
Matcha, my husband has cases of this stuff shipped from Hungary he loves id so much. Gulaskreme? It is mostly peppers with some oil and spices. He also gets mayo in a tube, and just started ordering some German(I think) vegetarian pate spread in a tube.
