I've been in Chicago since March, but it's only recently that I've had transportation to make it up to the blue and yellow giant known as IKEA. I've lived near them before so I'm not unfamiliar, but the IKEA Food section has changed over recent years, and with three trips in the last 12 days (it's a problem, I know) I keep finding new things that make their way into my cart!

Although the easy answer to this question is cinnamon rolls and meatballs, the new (to me) IKEA Food section holds several treasures that have made their way home with me in recent weeks. Small cans of fish, tubes of fish paste (there could be a trend here) and other assorted items have all proven to be very tasty.
Do you have a soft spot for something in the IKEA Food section or do you just grab an ice cream cone on the way out and beat feet? Let us know in the comments below!

Elizabeth Apron fro...

they have these amazing cookies at Christmas time...don't know what they are called, because I've called them Ikea Cookies since i was 10.
I'm going to have to say the alphabet cookies. I need to pick up like 10 boxes the next time I travel down there. Hopefully they keep in my pantry ...
Their snack bar was decidedly bland (the hot dogs were especially bad though very cheap.) I did like the ribs but I thought they were too expensive.
The elderflower syrup is delicious in cocktails. I also like the rye bread mix and whole wheat moose-shaped pasta.
They sell a chocolate filled cookie that's a lot like a Pepperidge Farm Brussels cookie. Can't remember what it's called, but it's lovely. I also like the lingonberry drinks, cream gravy powder, and load of other little things.
I picked up the elderflower syrup and the lingonberry syrup to mix with seltzer for spritzers this summer. I also like their rye crisp and I badly want to try the cheeses.
The frozen tarts made with Daim candy (drools like Homer Simpson). Also, the dill mustard.
Lingonberry Jam! Particularly delicious on mustard-roasted salmon.
I love their Swedish pear soft drink... not too sweet and very refreshing! I wish they start serving Swedish Spare ribs! http://7th-taste.com/2011/06/28/swedish-spare-ribs-with-cotes-du-rhone/
Those pizza hand pies, panzarotti (?). Haven't been in IKEA in a while, so I'm not sure this is still there. Reminds of the pizza they use to serve at school.
I love the lingonberry jam too, good on more than meatballs! I grew up in a Swedish family, so I have a soft spot for all the traditional food (though the seem to have less and less of it nowadays), especially the herring and the gingersnaps ... not together obviously.
Kakor Chokladflarn! They're like oat-y, thin chocolate cookies. So good!
As a native Swedish, it makes me smile seeing post like this and people commenting about traditional Swedish food. :) I guess I'm a bit proud, haha! Even if IKEA's food isn't the very best.
The meatballs! THE MEATBALLS!
Peparkakor - the thing spice cookies. They are sometimes in tins sometimes not. We used to make them as a kid, but they are a pain to make, and Ikea's are good.
Lingonberry preserves, although I can now find them in my local grocery. Must for going with meatballs and roast beef. Also good with chicken.
They have these great cardamom toasts (rusks?) Love those things. Mildly flavored.
Their salmon is good. The sauce that they serve with the salmon in the cafe, can be found in a jar as well and it's quite good.
Last time I was there, I bought some Anchovies because I want to make Jansson's Temptation. Still need to do that!
Elderflower syrup. Mmmmm.
I like the Diam chocolates - like little mini skor chocolate bars.
Elderflower syrup! Tho I'm always on the lookout for new goodies...
their picked herring is pretty dang tasty. i was pleasantly surprised!
Elderflower jam and cardamom crisp rolls, you can't find that stuff anywhere else. I love their fish based offerings also, but get them less often since I'm the only one in the house who will eat them...
Princess cake, elderberry and orange marmalade, lingonberry concentrate and the gingerbread toffee at christmas time!
Is it true about IKEA and the rainforests?
Salty licorice! And the herring is pretty good too.
Daim bars! The minis are evil, they make me eat the whole bag. Used to get them in England as Dime bars. Yum yum yum.
Oh man, the lingonberry jam. Every time I go to Ikea, a stop at the food court is absolutely necessary and I always, ALWAYS get the meatballs with jam.
I buy the heck outta the rye krispbread, lingonberry vinegar, & orange & elderflower marmalade as I eat almost all of it every day.
I always get their smoked salmon and their dill sauce.
@gerbil: true? Pah! Who cares, it sounds good. *eyeroll*
I could eat my way into a diabetic coma on those Daim bars.
Daaaaim!
The cheese, the cheese! All of them, especially the sharper farmer's cheese. It's the only cheese that makes me break my "no plastic packaging on MY food rule!"
The chocolate bars always get me, and I love the orange marmalade. We usually pick up the rye crisps too.
We always get hot dogs and chips when we go. Also a package of the frozen meatballs and the jar of lingonberry preserves. I also am in love with the car shaped marshmallows (bilar), though I haven't always been able to find them stocked.
The herring in garlic sauce is terrific. I always make sure to buy a couple bottles whenever I'm there.
Elderflower and orange marmalade. I keep it in my fridge at all times. Pair them with a strong cheese and a slice of bread. Divine!!!
DAIM candy. Also, I could live off of those green-marzipan-and-chocolate rolls.
As a Norwegian, Christmas is incomplete without cloudberry jam, and Ikea usually has this! Last year, the season for cloudberries was not good enough to supply the world with cloudberries, so Ikea was all out. I had to resort to another source, and pay $13 for a jar. Hopefully they will save me some cloudberries for Christmas this year...
The oat cookies with chocolate inbetween are dangerously good, and the daim frozen cake is amazing... Definitely try the yellow almond slice of cake for dessert after your meatballs next time, and then imagine it with a skor-like layer on top.
Without Ikea, what would Scandinavians do for our weird and wonderful foods? ;)
Just went to IKEA last week and was told they don't carry Daim anymore. :( Now they have a lame replacement that has barely taste-able caramel bits in it, IKEA brand. FAIL.
