We recently wrote about kicking the coffee habit, and although I definitely enjoy my cup of joe in the morning, I agree that a lot of what I enjoy is the ritual. On the weekends I look forward to making or seeking out the perfect brew, and during the week, I enjoy nursing it at my desk for much of the morning. Even the cup plays an important part: my favorites are large ones that I can wrap both hands around.
I've been taking a liking to old school camping mugs; they're big and cozy, and remind me of camping trips I took when I was a kid. My mom, on the other hand, prefers to drink her coffee out of china tea cups that she has collected over the years. My friend's dad has been searching for the perfect espresso cup for years, and has a cabinet full to prove it.
What about you? Do you have a favorite cup, or will any one do?

yes! an old well-loved mug with a faded canadian goose on it & years of tea stains, that my mom swiped from my grandmother & i swiped from my mom. just the perfect size for a hot drink.
My coffee cups are from my fiancee's grandfather - and were originally from Japan. Fantastic pieces that warm your hands and hold that perfect amount of java for the morning. The design prints on the outside make them even better.
Of course! My favorite mug is one I won at an astronomy event in high school. I also have a *least* favorite coffee cup - it's conical-shaped and huge and I only use it if every single other mug in the house is dirty.
I hardly drink coffee out of a regular mug anymore. When I'm at home, I always use a thermal travel mug. After taking coffee to work for so long in a travel mug or thermos, I can't stand how "cold" coffee seems after being in a regular coffee cup.. So, what I'm trying to say is, I've lost my mind and drink coffee out of a 16 oz travel mug at all times.
But now that I think about it, I always use the same cup for chai.
I do, not just one but a lot of them, I use them seasonally. There's a particular angel wing cup I use in December. One with Spring flowers and a warming cover that I use in late Winter when I'm sitting inside watching the rain fall and beginning to plan the spring garden plantings. One I bought from a prop company, attributed to a television show, it reminds me of all the times my mother and I sat together watching the show when I was a little kid (it was Bewitched, I think it was in syndication by then, we used to practice wiggling our noses together like Samantha and Tabitha). So no cup that I think is 'perfect' for any one particular drink but they support great memories so they're all perfect to me.
Yes! I use a mug that an old roommate left behind, which she took from the set of a music video shoot that she worked on. My now boyfriend, who lives with me, happens to have been IN that music video, and it was while watching that music video that I first realized how cute he was. That sounds complicated, but it holds a certain sentimental value to me now.
I have a couple of oversized ceramic mugs that I use a lot. My favorite is a Y2K mug... It's covered with advice about what to do when Y2K hit(s), including, "Use this mug to catch a rainbow trout." Other than that, I like travel mugs minus the lids. It's worth the danger of spilling my tea on the way from kitchen to bedroom, to have those few extra centimeters of space to use!
I have two matching blue mugs that I prefer to use - I like the shape and size. My fiance refuses to recognize this, I'm always all, are you kidding? when I see him using one and attempting to give me one of the other crappy ones
I have a set of Moomin mugs that I adore. The one with the Hattifatteners is my favorite.
Recently I bought a pink cup,I prefer to have my coffee in that cup,...
My favorite cups are thin china, with a wide shallow bowl. Obviously, you have to drink quickly or the beverage will go cold. But those thick heavy-rimmed mugs are grotesque to me---like drinking out of a bucket :-/
I like to mix it up often. I have a collection of mugs in different sizes and shaped- from large bowl-like ones to small cylindrical cappuccino mugs. Some come as a pair, some are singles.
In a recent, somewhat-morbid conversation with my partner, I asked him what one thing he would keep of mine if for some reason something were to happen to me. He said he would keep my collection of random mugs. I asked him why, and he said because my mug selection reflected my mood.
Hey, my screen name is a tribute to the mug that sits next to me every morning while I read the blog. Love it. (from a ceramics store on a trip to Turkey)
My Dr. Who TARDIS mug is my fav!
The short answer is yes, like nearly everyone above. My best friend gave me a very large teacup-shaped heavy ceramic mug for my birthday the year I moved to London––a surprisingly hard year for me, emotionally. The mug held sentimental value for me anyhow, coming from him, but now it's even more special. Plus it's huge.
However, my partner and I have tried to build a collection of coffee and tea cups in which all of them are our "favorite" mugs, and I think we've succeeded for the most part. We have a pair of handmade, surprisingly lightweight mugs; a dorky family-photo mug from a friend; a set of four delicate teacups and saucers a neighbor was chucking in a move; a mug that is cutesy-francophile but absolutely the perfect shape.... etc. Each one is a favorite in its own way, attached to its own memories or with its own im/perfect heft and design. So no matter which ones are clean at the time, the one I end up with is always a favourite.
I do, and it's big enough that my husband calls it 'the hot tub'. Holds about 16 oz as far as I can tell; enough to get the ol' eyes open in the a.m.
Mine's a "Sterling China" mug that's tan with brown speckles/dots and a stripe across the top that's not a solid bar, but more of a scribble. It was somewhat of an impulse buy at an antique store, but i couldn't pass it up for 25 cents. I'm so glad I got it, becuase now it's my absolute favorite! It reminds me of a 50s/60s diner. :)
I absolutely have a favorite cup, and insist that my morning latte tastes at least 100% better in it. I will actually wash and re-use it multiple times in a day instead of grabbing a clean one from the cupboard. It's a little red and white mug from anthropologie that I just love.

A couple years ago I came across a Jars Ceramics mug on sale at Starbucks. It's a great looking mug and it does an amazing job of retaining heat. It's a very basic mug but if you know anything about Jars Ceramics then you know it is a quality mug and provided I don't drop it it should last a lifetime.
I buy a cup and that's MY mug. No one else uses it. Right now I have a pink one from Ikea. It's like an ice cream cone.
my partner and i always fight over a really goofy souvenir mug we bought at walgreens in miami. the rest of our mugs are part of a boring matching set. Usually whoever makes the coffee/tea gets it, unless you are in trouble then you have to give it to the other.
i usually drink from my bodum pavina glass, but since I shattered it I've been using my favorite mug which is a character from a grammar comic because I'm a total grammar nerd.
it is my favorite mug in the whole world, but for some reason I only use it after breaking things... it made a pretty good measuring cup too when i made my croissants
I had a favorite for years - the one thing I took with me from my parent's kitchen when I went to college. It broke during a move, and I spent a few years looking for the perfect mug. Had to feel right in the hand. Had to be big but not too big, with the right height / width ratio. Had to have colors I wouldn't mind looking at, and ideally a pattern that was quirky without being annoying. I eventually settled on a nice one from fishs eddy with a neat design that fits into my interests. It's not perfect, but it has served me well for the past three years.
Yes, I have a 16 oz ceramic mug with a picture of a Yorkie on it. A co-worker gave it to me for Christmas over ten years ago and I still use it every day for both coffee and tea. I love it firstly, because it was a gift from a good friend. It's handle is large enough for my hand to hold comfortably and the body of the mug is thick and sturdy and holds heat well so I can warm my hands with it while enjoying my morning brew.
My best friend gave me this mug a couple of years ago, and it's my favorite: http://www.polyvore.com/urban_outfitters_flared_bike_mug/thing?id=21259344
My favorite mug is the one I got from the Spice Girls reunion tour. It has all their names in fluorescent colors down one side.. it's just the perfect size too! Runner up mug is from Goodwill, pretty vintage brown with birds on it.
This is my favorite: http://yfrog.com/j5ao8wj
cb2 beam mug--makes a cup of black coffee look perfect and feels sturdy!
On the weekends, I use my dad's old US Army cup. I love it. At work, during the week, I frequently am teased about the size of my large (cheap) white mug. It's cool. I've downsized. I now have a 2 cup sized mug. I'd have an IV line of liquid caffeine if I could.
