Do you remember when Kraft said that it would be changing its classic mac and cheese recipe? They made an announcement that they planned to remove artificial preservatives, flavorings, and dyes from the product, and then they went quiet for a year. But they didn’t stop working!

It turns out that their silence was a carefully planned marketing move. Since the announcement last year, Kraft has not only finished reformulating the recipe, but they also sent it to market! If you’ve purchased and prepared Kraft Macaroni and Cheese since December 2015, it’s very likely that you sampled the new recipe without even realizing it.

Greg Guidotti, vice president for meal solutions at Kraft Heinz, told The New York Times that they’ve “sold well over 50 million boxes with essentially no one noticing.” They managed to maintain the trademark golden color naturally by adding familiar spices like paprika and turmeric to the recipe. Pretty cool, huh?

And, naturally, I have to ask: Did anyone notice? I’m crossing my fingers I have an “old” box in the pantry so I can do a side-by-side comparison soon!
