One of the best gifts to find under the Christmas tree is a new cookbook. It opens up new possibilities in the kitchen, new recipes to try, new stories to tell. Did you receive a new cookbook this holiday? Have you dove in yet? What recipes are you excited to make?
Personally, I'm looking forward to a chance to cook out of my friend Nancy Hachisu's new book, Japanese Farm Food (pictured above) and learn a little more about Japanese food, which I haven't cooked very much.
What about you? Any new books? Any recipes in particular you're eager to try?

Mini minimalist by Mark Bittman. 4 tiny cookbooks. Fun, not sure it's that useful, though.
Smitten Kitchen Cookbook and River Cottage Everyday... it could be a plump year!
Gluten Free Slow Cooker by Ellen Brown. I've already made her slow cooker risotto twice and it was fantastic both times - not to mention easy to put together. A great book, even if you're not gluten free.
Ruhlman's Twenty, Ad Hoc at Home, and Cook's Illustrated Science of Good Cooking. Loving them all so far!
New cookbooks? Yes. I made bank this year in the cookbook department: The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook, Japanese Farm Food (off a recommendation from you fine people!), The Blue Chair Jam Cookbook, and Jerusalem. I'm so excited I can't decide where to begin!
I received Bittman's Mini Minimalist and my husband received Pure Beef. I think we are more excited to try the recipes in Pure Beef since we are looking at getting 1/8th of a cow for our deep freeze.
Ooh, wanted Japanese Farm Food, but went with Susan Feniger's Streetfood and Naomi Duigud's Burma. Made Duguid's lemongrass and ginger sliders and Feniger's curry caramel corn for New Years Eve and both were delicious, and big hits!
I got Rose Petal Jam about Polish food, which I love, it's beautiful, from my Polish Grandmother (bought my mu mum on her behalf as she can't get to the shops). Hoping to make ALL the recipes...in due course!
I was spoiled with all sorts of fun cooking things this year. Cookbooks and things to cook in!
Cookbooks I got over the holidays:
Eat Me Too - Its lovely, I haven't made anything from it yet thought
Canadian Living One Dish Collection - Awesome for my (2) New dutch ovens and cast iron frying pan!
The Complete Book of Small-Batch Preserving: Over 300 Recipes to Use Year-Round - Going to try my hand at canning
its going to be a yummy 2013!
I received Smitten Kitchen cookbook, and finally a subscription to Cooks Illustrated. Yay!
Ina Garten's Foolproof and Lidia's Favorite Recipes. Looking forward to cooking from both although truth be told, I've only browsed through them at this point.
I finally, *FINALLY* got The River-Cottage cook book, and I've never been happier. As for giving gifts, everyone in my family got a cook book reflective of their likes to compliment their presents.
My awesome sister gave me two from my wish list: Harold McGee's Keys to Good Cooking and Perla Meyer's 1993 The Art of Seasonal Cooking (on the Kitchn's recommendation), which I have already put to use with great results. My also awesome sister-in-law gave me Susie Middleton's Fresh & Green Table, which I had not seen before and am excited to read. And I gifted myself Diane Morgan's Roots because I found a copy on sale and couldn't resist that beautiful cover. It's going to be a fun year!
Yes! Like many here, I received Smitten Kitchen cookbook. But also, Burma, a river of flavor, and CI's Science of Good Food. Haven't tried the Burma cookbook yet, but both SK and CI's have great recipies. Come see my reviews here and here. Its going to be a yummy year!
Jerusalem and Whole Grains for a New Generation for Christmas (and Smitten Kitchen as a gift in November, so we made Christmas Eve dinner from it). I'm pretty excited about quite a few vegetable and bean dishes in Jerusalem, and have already done a decent amount of cooking from Smitten Kitchen.
Based on your recommendation:

I ordered Kim O'Donnel's "The Meat Lover's Meatless Celebrations" from my local (here in Germany) bookstore, rather than through That Online Place. Gotta keep my favorite bookstore in business!
I was so impressed that the recipes use real ingredients with lots of flavor (instead of fake pretend-it's-meat processed stuff), that I've ordered her earlier book, "The Meat Lover's Meatless Cookbook". She has some awesome-looking recipes, which I'm looking forward to trying out.
My husband and I are not vegetarians, but we eat meat in small quantities, and we appreciate vegetarian meals a few times a week. And, of course, we have friends who have dietary restrictions, and we are glad to have ideas for tasty dishes we can share with them. There are lots of recipes that are gluten-free (or can be easily made so if you have any experience with substitutions), vegan, dairy optional, and kid friendly.
katipalin - the photography in Rose Petal Jam looks beautiful. Please come back and tell us how the recipes turn out.
Edible Selby (not quite a cookbook, but has recipes) and Kim O'Donnel's Celebrations and Susan Feniger's Street Food, as mentioned above - loving them all!
I received Ina Gaten's Foolproof for Christmas, then turned around and tried the beef tenderloin recipe for Christmas Eve dinner...it was wonderful! Can't wait to try some others.
As many others have as well -- Smitten Kitchen! Also, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Vol 1, and Barefoot Contessa's French Cookbook. :) I've already christened my brand new Le Creuset French Oven with a batch of Boeuf Bourguignon! And the No-Knead Bread...and a batch of Barefoot Contessa Tomato Soup.... :)
I think Deb Perelman needs to send the Kitchn editors a batch of cookies! :)
I got Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's Three Good Things, which is nice and interesting but I'm not sure whether it'll be useful yet. I usually love HF-W so I'm sure I'll find something. I was also given some old unwanted cookbooks: Nigella's baking book and a book of Irish classics. The best food gofts were a hand-selected basket of interesting condiments, spices and ingredients from my parents and a Kenwood compact food processor from my grandad.
I gave Jerusalem, with a jar of homemade preserved lemons.
Surprised no one has mentioned this one, but I got Dinner: A Love Story, and have already marked recipes I'm going to try over the next month!
I bought the Smitten Kitchen cookbook for myself as an early Christmas present, but I also received the Mini Minimalist cookbooks, Desserts in Jars, and as someone else mentioned, the Rose Petal Jam cookbook from a great aunt (quite a sweet surprise, along with a beautiful note about a piece I wrote about my great-grandmothers baking). I also bought myself a few vintage cookbooks that I'm excited to try to cook from (it's one of my new year's resolutions).
This one is a few years old now, but I received a copy of "Plenty" by Yotam Ottolenghi, and I also received Ina Garten's "Foolproof". I think I'll have to go buy Smitten Kitchen for myself this weekend!
My kitchen has been smitten - we've tried the leek fritters (delicious) and the dill slaw (pretty darn good, but that's a lot of slaw!). I got the Ottolenghi 'Jerusalem' book for my mom, so I might have access to that. I also got a slow cooker book that I haven't done a test run on yet.
I got Smitten Kitchen and my husband got Fire in my Belly. Neither have been broken in yet, though I went through SK page by page immediately. As soon as I saw my husband put FIMB on his list, I knew someone would jump at the chance to buy it for him. "He's COOKING?!" :-)
Like many other folks I received the Smitten Kitchen cookbook, as well as Terry Hope Romero's Vegan Eats World. I've made some salads from SK already (unsurprisingly, they were both delicious) and have a recipe from Vegan Eats World on the menu for tonight!
I received Jerusalem and Plenty. It's an Ottolenghi party!
Tried to get Japanese Farm Food for Christmas, but it was backordered! (hmm, wonder whose fault that is? ;-)) And gave my copy of Jerusalem as an unexpected gift (to be replaced), so the only cookbook I am left with is Mourad Lahlou's New Moroccan, which is making me swoon.
He writes so beautifully, and illuminates so much about Moroccan food that this is no mere cookbook. Time will tell how much I cook out of it (although I am already planning on trying his version of the classic lentil soup with date balls), but it is worth getting for the poetry of life it imparts.
I received The Dirt Candy cookbook, which is not only amazing in terms of its depth and breadth for cooking vegetables, but also written in a fun way with illustrations (almost has a graphic novel feel). My boyfriend received an autographed copy of Michael Symon's "Carnivore" from his mother--props to her!
Still on the wishlist: Jerusalem and The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook. Luckily my birthday is in January ;)!
My husband bought me the Smitten Kitchen cookbook, and I can't wait to start cooking from it! Already started with the gingerbread dutch baby, and can't wait to start cranking out more recipes!
Smitten Kitchen cookbook; Tartine; and Local Bread. Yum! My family & friends know me too well. I only asked for Local Bread!
Like Rosebud, I got Lidia's Favorite Recipes and I also got your casserole book, Faith! Honestly haven't cooked from either yet, but looking forward to it!
ina's foolproof. made the sweet potato + orange puree last night. excellent even with half the butter!!
I got the Bouchon Bakery cookbook after looking forward to it for months. It def did not disappoint with the excellent writing, photos and basic to ellaborate recipes. Can't wait to tackle the macarons.
I got the Food in Jars cookbook, and I can't wait to start on new canning adventures!
Another vote here for the Smitten Kitchen cookbook. It's fantastic. I've only made one thing from it, but I look forward to making more.
Amen to all the praise for Smitten Kitchen! I have probably made the chocolate chip brioche pretzels about a dozen times in a month. They're to die for. Can't wait to try all the others! I really wanted Jerusalem too but ordered it from the library to check it out first :)
I bought myself Sara Jenkins new cookbook/iPad app New Italian Pantry. I adore it. It lays out the staples that an Italian always has in their pantry with videos on how use and store them. Then when you come home from the market with something fresh you can enter it into the search function and come up with a recipe, knowing that you have all the other ingredients on hand. Genius!
I received "The Picky Palate Cookbook" and "Baked: Elements". I've already made the streusel baked french toast from the PIcky Palate-it was deeeeelicious!
I gave my mom the Smitten Kitchen cookbook, and SURPRISE! My brother gave me the Smitten Kitchen cookbook. We must be on the same wavelength!
I gave myself (boxing day sale!) Rick Bayless Authentic Mexican Cookbook...have wanted it forever.
I got a few:
- Herbivoracious by Michael Natkin
- Into the Vietnamese Kitchen by Andrea Nguyen
- Kitchen Diaries I & II by Nigel Slater
Best Christmas ever!
I am LOVING Herbivoracious. Need to get the word out!
I received the Food in Jars cookbook and Robb Walsh's Texas Eats - I'm in love with both of them! So many good recipes!
I am a little late to the party as I just recently discovered this blog :)
My new cookbooks that I am currently enjoying are:
- Nordstrom's Family Table Cookbook (great shrimp salad recipe with cilantro lime dressing that they serve at their cafe);
- The Lebanese Kitchen by Salma Hage (a new spin to my ethnic heritage)
- Bite by Bite by Peter Callahan ((stylish petite appetizers)
- Ina Gartten's Foolproof (I have all of her books and love most of her recipes)
