Dessert Inspiration: Maggie Austin's Gorgeous Cakes

There are some things that I have come to accept in this world. For instance I will probably never be a world renowned opera singer, learn to figure skate — spandex just isn't my thing — or be able to design a cake like Maggie Austin.

Maggie Austin is a jack-of-all-trades in the art world and not just in the culinary field. She started out as a professional ballet dancer and then ended up in culinary school, later training under some of the most illustrious chefs and pastry artists.

Her work is impeccable and is a mix between fine art and classical painting techniques and pastry design. She does things with icing that never seemed possible before, almost as if it were clay instead of sugar and egg. There's ruffles and flowers and flowing movement that almost makes her cakes feel alive instead of created.

She currently operates out of DC and you can find her at her own shop, Maggie Austin Cake. If you need a little inspiration for your day, then her website is a must see. Her portfolio is always growing and even if many of us will never be able to control icing in the manner she does, it's still a great place to visit and know that someone can.
