We've had several questions from readers lately about stylish and functional storage for onions and garlic in the kitchen. So we were really taken with this small, easy project from Country Home: Transform vintage tube pans with a bit of paint and a chain!
This project is simple: You prime some vintage or inexpensive cake tins, then paint them and link them together with chains and a hook. Presto! A hanging set of baskets for fruit or vegetables.
We really like this little project, since it's neater than the usual hanging baskets, which let papery onion skins drift all over your countertop.
This is also a great way to get a little extra color in your kitchen: Imagine these tins spraypainted with bright yellow enamel, or turquoise blue color, like a robin's egg!

I LOVE this! I will be scouring the flea markets for cake pans this summer...
That looks so pretty!
Oh, what a great idea! I love it.
That is fantastic!! I imagine old mixing bowls, in graduating size, would work well, too. Beautiful!
Absolutely adorable! But wouldn't you have to drill some holes in the tins first?
Gorgeous! What, it's not something already available on Etsy?? :)
That looks lovely – pretty but not too cutesy. But I wouldn't store onions in there, when they're exposed to sunlight they start to sprout. Store onions in a well-ventilated dark place, along with your potatoes but not touching them.
This is really cute! Do I have any space to hang this??
However, I would recommend caution when it comes to paint selection...if you are putting food in contact with it everyday make sure to get something that is designed for kitchen/food use.
I was just going to ask that question, Lacey8685. I wanted to spray paint a wire food basket I bought at Crate and Barrel. Loved the style, just needed a different color. I called many different paint companies, both spray and regular and none said their paints were safe for food contact. So if anyone knows of one, please post the brand and type! Thanks.
