To pass muster, a honey bun needs to literally ooze with honey. This is what distinguishes a honey bun from a regular sticky bun, after all! The best versions have honey in both the dough and the filling. Cinnamon, orange zest, and chopped pecans help round out the flavors and textures.
We found surprisingly few recipes around the web. Most just seemed like honey-ed versions of other bun recipes and were too cautious with the honey!
One of the most intriguing honey bun recipes we found comes from Martha Stewart and calls for creme fraiche and marscapone in the filling. Since honey buns can be overwhelmingly sweet (even for us!), we like the tangy contrast this would provide.
