Sometimes we forget how simple it is to make ice cream. All you really need is sugar, cream, and a way to cool down the liquid while shaking it until it thickens. No fancy mixer needed. In fact, a canning jar and a handful of ice will do the trick quite nicely!
Shared by Victoria of City Cradle Design and posted to the Style Me Pretty blog, this idea for making individual ice cream kits in canning jars is absolutely brilliant. Sugar, vanilla powder, and creamer packets are sealed inside a plastic bag and packed into the canning jar along with some rock salt. When the ice cream mood strikes, you combine the ice cream ingredients in their bag, add some ice to the rock salt, and shake vigorously.
As soon as we saw this tutorial, the gears started turning. Since ice is the only extra thing you need, this would be a great treat to pack for a picnic, camping trip, or even a long car trip. Heck, you could even keep a jar in your drawer at work in case of ice cream emergencies!
Jars could also go into care packages or be handed out as a thank you gift at the end of a dinner party. The kits are inexpensive, easy to assemble, and sure to be lots of fun for everyone involved.

Love this idea!
This looks great. Anyone have any idea on the measurements if you used fresh milk or cream instead of the creamer packets?
Emma, did you try this out? I like the idea but am a little skeptical about the do-ability. I am certain I can run down to the Stop-N-Go and grab a quart of Cookies-and-Cream. (and perhaps a Mickey's Big Mouth, All Star Wrestling Magazine, and a pack of Camels, for that matter)
This is great, but what exactly is vanilla powder?
Emma, thanks so much for the feature!
Joyosity, Vanilla powder is something used toe flavor coffee you can buy it in the grocery store section that carries the half and half.
Phoxx, you are right buying ice cream is much easier but not nearly as fun:)
Vicky, You can also buy powdered vanilla that's meant to be used in cooking. My snobby grocery store has it but my regular one doesn't. It's kind of a pill to find.

hahaha! snobby grocery store! those are really the most fun ones though...
love this! it's definitely being filed away for my future wedding :)
How long do you have to shake the jar to get the mixture to freeze enough?
You can actually use a coffee can and roll it around on the floor as well. And that's lighter than a mason jar. We used to do it when I was a kid. Dunno if this recipe is any good but if will give you the general idea: http://crafts.kaboose.com/ice-cream-in-a-can-or-kick-the-can.html
really surprised at how many people talk about using this as a wedding favor. Because everyone at a wedding has a cooler in the car to keep the half and half cold? And all brides have access to a huge fridge to keep hundreds of mason jars cold.
Because we all know this needs to be kept refrigerated, right? Right?
jazminecat: actually it doesn't have to be refrigerated....that's the weird beauty of the minnie moo half and halfs - they do not need to be put in the fridge, they have a pretty long shelf life.
