A great doner kebab is a thing of wonder. Fresh hot pita stuffed with juicy lamb, crisp lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and topped off with hot sauce and a bit of tahini sauce (and sometimes a few French fries!), it's not an easy dish to pull off at home. The lamb is cooked in a tall stack, turning on a spit, for one. But there's an easy (or easier) way to make it at home!
We wouldn't say this method is exactly easy, but it sure beats any other way we can think of to replicate the roasted lamb doner kebabs are based on. It involves grinding lamb and mixing it with breadcrumbs, garlic, onion and herbs. Then the mixture is formed into patties and essentially cooked into a cylinder and cooked using a blowtorch. Whether you're looking for another use for your culinary blowtorch or just having a massive craving for doner kebab, this recipe could give your street cart kebab man a run for his money.

Another version, eaten in Arizona, is called the Navajo Taco...fresh mutton is grilled over juniper or pinon wood, stuffed into an oversize frybread round with freshly grilled vegetables. One of my favorites!
Oh my goodness! I use to eat these weekly when I lived in Belgium. I love doner kebabs, especially with frites. Yum!
OMG Doner Kebab! I want to move back to Germany just for these!
Here in Canada, these things are called Donairs and can be found everywhere. Is this a rarity in the States?
@LIVERWURST- Yes! this is a total rarity in the states. I spent a semester in Germany and fell in love with Doner Kebab and have never been able to find one back home. The closest I came was a restaurant in San Francisco, but it still was more like a Gyro than a Kebab.
Hah hah hah, DIY Döner, that's so funny! I've heard that they don't actually make Döner in Turkey, but in Germany you can get it at every corner. It has lots of salad and yoghurt in it, so I tell myself it's practically health food.
I've never heard of this but it sounds wonderful. I love lamb. Will certainly try this.
I love doner kebab! When I studied in Madrid I would get them frequently as a cheap lunch. Yum!
