On the heels of recent listeria outbreaks — first from Blue Bell Ice Cream, followed by Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams earlier this year — the Justice Department announced this week that companies could stand to face serious consequences for future outbreaks of food-borne illness and other safety hazards.
New penalties can range from civil to criminal prosecution. While enforcement has been lax for many years, the admission noted that food companies have a responsibility and obligation to bring safe food to consumers, and they're keeping a watchful eye.
