Seeing this GRUNDTAL wall shelf in a house tour today at Apartment Therapy, I realized how ubiquitous and useful this particular product is. There are a few products like this that show up over and over again in kitchens, products that are inexpensive and infinitely useful. Let's take a closer look, shall we?
The owners of this kitchen have really maximized this shelf, using it to store pots, pans, pretty Dansk bakeware, and even a watering can and a basket of root vegetables. It's both pretty and useful, acting as a centerpiece in the kitchen and showing off some of their prettiest things.
This shelf is sleek and industrial in looks, and very suited to storing a lot of gear. S-hooks are used here too to hang pots. And all for a very low price — qualifying this shelf for sure as one of our classic kitchen basics!

I've got these all over my house, and even more on my shopping list for the next trip to IKEA, here's how I use mine:
Kitchen as a pot rack (obviously!)
Bathroom as a towel rack above the toilet (on one I have a small tray that holds pretty jars with bathroom essentials like cotton swabs)
Laundry area to hold supplies above the machines plus one mounted high enough that it's the drying rack over the laundry sink
Gardening area there are two just above my potting table to hold supplies and another two mounted higher near the ceiling, to hold things that should be out of reach of pets or kids, and those also have hooks for scissors & funnels & watering cans
These are absolutely the most versatile things IKEA offers... :)
We also have one of these in our kitchen/dining room.
