When I heard this week would be Egg Week on The Kitchn, I closed my eyes and thought for a minute what I might write about. What immediately came to mind was an egg I enjoyed at a quaint restaurant overlooking the shores of San Sebastian. More
It may look like a simple cheese panini, but braaibroodjie is more than meets the eye both culturally and taste-wise. Traditionally served at the end of a South African barbecue — braai in Afrikaans — these sandwiches are usually cooked over open coals and include and unusual combination of flavors: sharp cheddar cheese, tomato, onion and a layer of fruit chutney. My twist swaps out the raw onion for smoky grilled scallions and can be made on a grill pan or outdoor grill. Crunchy and gooey with a unique savory-sweet balance, they make a great lunch or crowd-pleasing late-night snack.

How well do you plan your weekday lunches? And what do you do when you don't have time to pack a lunch - does it throw you off? When I have one of those multiple-snooze-button mornings, I usually end up buying lunch even when I have a perfectly suitable - yet unassembled - meal waiting in the 'fridge at home. A friend shared her last minute lunch secret with me and it's totally changed my busy weeks. More
We first became addicted to this sandwich when it appeared on the deli menu at City Feed and Supply, and quickly adapted it to our own kitchen! With grainy mustard, sharp cheese, and some crunchy apples, this is the perfect sandwich for a light summer meal outdoors. More
I'm a Los Angeles native, which means I have never owned a decent umbrella, I describe distances not in miles but in the number of minutes it takes to drive, and I believe sliced avocado belongs on a BLT. My first BLTA was probably at a diner — any Southern California diner worth its salt has at least an add-on avocado option for its BLT — and it was probably fine. It's hard to go wrong with the combination of crisp lettuce, salty bacon, ripe tomato and avocado. But this homemade version is much better, if only for the addition of a bright basil mayonnaise that makes every bite taste like a mouthful of summer. More
Are you grilling out tomorrow, July 4th? Or maybe you're doing a more casual picnic — just you, a friend, a basket with some sandwiches, and bottle of Prosecco. If that's the case, let us offer a few ideas for sandwiches, from the sublime yet simple tomato-mozzarella sandwich, to a bánh mì stuffed with lemongrass tofu, to the classic farmer's lunch of apples, mustard, and cheese. Oh, and we throw in that famous Smörgåstårta (aka Sandwich Cake), just for fun! More
Every now and then, a truly smile-worthy idea comes to our attention that blends food, culture, art, and innovation. This happened last week when we came across art student and designer Kelly Pratt's project Stately Sandwiches. More
"I'll take a salmon BLT, hold the bacon, lettuce, and tomato. And as many extra lemon slices as you will give me." Yep, that was my go-to lunch order at our favorite little hometown cafe. I was a very particular little kid. At least I ate the salmon, but thank goodness the times have changed! More
The other day I bought an 'heirloom' tomato grown a few hundred miles away in the Central Valley of California. I know it's only June and the truly homegrown tomatoes aren't in season yet, but I've been really craving a fresh tomato for my salads. Also, I was curious if it would turn out to taste as good as it looked. So I brought it home and sliced it into a green salad and of course it was disappointing. Not that it was horrible, but it wasn't great. The flavor was so-so and the texture a little too soft and mealy. I should have gone with the strawberries. More
When a friend of mine was discussing appetite with her new Dutch beau, he told her, "I was much hungrier as a boy — I could eat ten strawberry sandwiches in one sitting!" Wait, rewind, she said. Strawberry sandwiches? More
