We came across these artichokes at a Greenmarket in midtown Manhattan and were baffled.

We know that Greenmarkets are only permitted to sell local products. We also knew that, as artichoke.org says, "Nearly one hundred percent of all artichokes grown commercially in the United States are grown in California."

Not these baby artichokes! This batch of baby artichokes was grown in New Jersey. These artichokes are selling for $6/pound from Maxwell's Farms. We were told these artichokes went into the ground in February for harvest in July and August. More

There was a rush on chameh melons yesterday at the Greenmarket near the UN. After shoppers tasted a bite, they had to try one ($1/pound, Yuno's Farms).

These small yellow melons are perfect for small refrigerators, where a watermelon just won't fit.

Peel these melons with a vegetable peeler. Serve chameh very cold and eat the white fruit, the seeds, and the delicious cooling gel around the seeds. More

Italian flat beans, also known as Romano green beans, are in season now.

These beans are flat in form, but not in flavor. Compared to standard green beans, these beans have a bright, slightly sweet flavor and more meaty texture. "... More green-tasting, more alive-tasting than other beans," reports Veggie Venture.

We blanched our flat beans in salted boiling water and then finished them in a frying pan with some olive oil, garlic, and chopped fresh tomato. Don't keep them in the pan for too long. Flat beans will start to break apart and turn mushy when overcooked.

Tupperware is the deal of the week on Craig's List. From what we've read in the listings, it looks like a Tupperware sales person from the Upper West Side quit and is selling off excess inventory.

We were busted at the sweet corn bin at Union Square Greenmarket yesterday.

"I hate it when people strip them all down," preached the woman standing next to us. She was referring to the corn on the cob, of course.

She caught us pulling back the husks to make sure each ear of corn looked good. She started a loud conversation, announcing to us corn shoppers that peeking into each ear of corn makes a mess, is unsanitary, and "really just isn't necessary."

She's right, we realized.

Here's some corn on the cob shopping tips we picked up from the the man running the stand: Look for corn with tassels that are brown and sticky to the touch. If the tassels are black or dry, the corn is old. Feel each ear through the husk, without peeling it, to check for even plump kernels.

Here's a handsome vintage stove for $200. We're not sure if anyone is in the market for vintage appliances (are you?), but we had to post this photo. There's watercolor like quality to it.

Makes us think about all the people who stood at this stove pulling supper together and wonder why this seller is ready to part with this Paragon gas stove.
