We're confident in our abilities to make a pretty gosh-darn good cocktail, but our creations look pretty humble when compared to the potables from the mixology wizkids at NYC's poshest bars. They bring back classic creations and use unusual ingredients to create sublimely balanced drinks.

So we're excited about two upcoming classes at the Astor Center, which incidentally, might make a pretty good Father's Day gift.

Whenever food-loving visitors come from out of town, we take them to our favorite markets and restaurants. And we're always sure to lead them on a foodie walking tour of Greenwich Village's Bleecker Street. In just a few short blocks, there's one of our favorite cheese stores, several great bakeries, old-school butchers, and lots of places to stop for pick-me-up refreshments. Whether you're assembling a picnic, going home to cook a feast, or just browsing, there's plenty to see and do.

It's finally actually spring: ramps are in season. Strolling through Saturday's Greenmarket, we were surprised but elated to see them. This wild member of the lily family (which also includes onions, garlic, and leeks), has such a short growing season that you need to grab them while you can. More

We're suckers for free samples, and the Westside Market on 110th and Broadway has been hawking these in-house rice cakes for a while now.

They set them up with a variety of dips, right next to a "Magic Pop" machine that apparently produces the rice cakes (although it wasn't magically popping while we were there). After several free samples over two different trips, we finally bought a bag.

Now, we first have to say that we kind of like rice cakes. Sometimes we need a crunchy fix, and they are good vehicles for peanut butter. We found these to be a nice upgrade from the uniform, puck-shaped variety. More
