Sweet, second harvest figs have been popping up all over the trees in our neighborhood (right behind our apartment!) and at local farmers' markets. At the Hollywood Farmers' Market this past weekend, we found luscious Brown Turkey, Black Mission, Kadota, and Calimyrna figs. One of the newer vendors at the Hollywood and Santa Monica farmers' markets is Carlsbad Aquafarm. Hailing from the Agua Hedionda Lagoon outside San Diego, the family-run business provides farm-raised, sustainably-harvested oysters, mussels, clams, and abalone. (The business was interviewed on Good Food earlier this year.) Being a vegetarian, I must admit I had been passing the stand by, until I discovered that they also carry fresh seaweed. More
After months of anticipation, we are finally approaching high tomato season at the Hollywood Farmers' Market! Tomatoes are one of those fruits we learned to appreciate on a whole new level once we started shopping at the farmers' market (and growing our own). With their myriad shapes and colors and complex flavors, choosing and eating farmers' market tomatoes can invigorate the senses. Click through for more market pictures and a recipe... More
Our favorite meal of the week is also the simplest one. Every Sunday, we make post-farmers' market sandwiches using ingredients from our trip to the Hollywood Farmers' Market. The components change from week to week depending on what's in season and looks good to us that morning, so the sandwiches are absolutely fresh and alive with flavor. This week we were inspired by Grilling Month, peaches, and Mojave goat cheese... More
Summer gourds are appearing all over the Hollywood Farmers' Market, and among them is our favorite, the lemon cucumber. More
One of the things we love about shopping at our local farmers' market every week is the sense of community; we've gotten to know our vendors and are familiar with their products throughout the seasons. (We are also spoiled by living near the Hollywood market, which is one of the largest in town.) However, with nearly 90 Certified Farmers' Markets in LA County, we like to make the effort to explore other markets from time to time, learning about different foods and neighborhoods. We recently visited the Alhambra Farmers' Market, which is notable for its large selection of Asian produce. More
Last week, we reported on the abundance of stone fruit at the Hollywood Farmers' Market. One of the most prized stone fruits available in LA and other California farmers' markets is the Blenheim apricot. Although they are considered by many to be the most delicious of the apricots, Blenheims are rarely seen in stores or shipped out of state. More
It's unmistakable — stone fruit season is in full swing at the Hollywood Farmers' Market! Different varieties of peaches, plums, nectarines, apricots, and cherries started to appear several weeks ago, but now they are really reaching prime sweetness and flavor. More
The Hollywood Farmers' Market is bustling even more than usual these days, as shoppers take advantage of the early summer sunshine and produce. Tucked between stands overflowing with stone fruits and strawberries are other, more delicate and fleeting specialties: garlic scapes and blossoms. More
