The first time we saw a stocky pair of salad hands sticking out of a friend's salad bowl, we were not impressed. They look like bear claws, frankly. But over the years, we've noticed we tend to toss salads with our bare hands—so much more efficient than trying to use traditional tongs. I am still looking for a better storage solution for my knives; they are currently knocking about in a drawer. The drawer is an awkward size and I am not yet sure if it will hold an in-drawer knife rack. I don't want to give up counter space for a block, and magnetic knife racks scare me just a little bit. Next in line with celebrity-branded culinary tools is Chef Emeril Lagasse's new cutlery line for Wüsthof. I had a chance to give these knives a turn. Set to dislike them for their celebrity-backing (I'm partial to no-name restaurant-supply knives) and their odd, faux-wood handles, I ended up impressed with their design and functionality. More

We mostly focus on the practical, here at The Kitchn. We like good ideas for everyday cooking and recipes that anyone can make. But we also like to keep an eye on the fanciful and the creative! We learned the news yesterday when the NY Times called asking for permission to use our photo of Jim Ades, the famous carrot peeler of Union Square (and occasionally other parts of the city.)

He was known for his bravado and his enthusiasm for the peelers he sold. He never was officially part of the Greenmarket, rather choosing to park himself on the fringes of the market, capitalizing on the traffic, but never obtaining a vendor's license.

You know I love mandolines. They are probably the one seemingly-extraneous kitchen gadget that I absolutely recommend to have if you cook regularly. I sent Faith my favorite, the Benriner, and she gave it an extensive review. I've also talked about using tiny Swiss peelers as an alternative to a mandoline.
