Bi-color cabinets are a growing trend, but this example does something a little unusual: they extend the black color up the wall, and even paint right over the lower part of the cream cabinet for a very clear-cut light/dark line. An unusual choice, don't you think? Would you do it this way? See another photo below:
Are you familiar with the French range maker company La Cornue? If not, allow us to introduce you to something that will inevitably haunt your dreams for the foreseeable future. These showstopping ranges are always the focal point of any kitchen they're in. How could they not be? The design, the colors, the richness and elegance of the whole thing. But at $8,000 a pop, they're clearly not for the budget-inclined. Ah well. It's the stuff dreams are made of. More
I'll be the first to admit that I'm horrible about meal planning. Thirty minutes before dinner, I find myself in a panic defrosting meat I forgot to thaw, or rushing out to pick up an ingredient that slipped my mind. You know what I think would help those of us who are challenged by meal planning? Having the week planned out, written down, and right before your eyes, and in a way that looks good, too!. That's where these chalkboards come in. Check out the inspiration and tell me this wouldn't help you to stay on top of the meal planning at your house!: More
Bar carts made a big comeback in recent years as people took to keeping their liquor out in the open. But if that's not your thing, here's another use for them: a mobile storage place for dishes and kitchen tools! More
It's difficult to make sweeping generalizations about kitchen renovations and builds (other than the old "add 50% to the initial estimate!" rule — always a good idea!). Every kitchen is different, just as every cook has a slightly different set of desires and priorities. However, as I've researched and shopped for my own kitchen, which is being built from the ground up, I've made some trade-offs in costs and priority that, so far, seem worth it to me. Here are five of my own save/splurge decisions for a new kitchen. More
I love this cheery little pantry, which illustrates some cute printable labels from Better Homes and Gardens. What I really love, though, even more than the labels, are the calendar and shopping list on the back of the door! More
Most cooks appreciate every scrap of storage space allotted to their kitchen, big or small, urban or suburban. Some of us let the kitchen spill out into other spaces in the home (remember how David Lebovitz keeps his ice cream maker under the bed?). I recaptured an inefficient coat closet and turned it into a cheery little pantry — one of my all-time most useful kitchen projects! Packing all your kitchen goods together in a pantry like this can really streamline your organizing and post-grocery shopping routine. Here are ten more inspiring examples of pantries, each with a takeaway for small spaces. More
We've talked about wallpaper in the kitchen before, showing vibrant, pretty kitchens decked out in paper; as well as smaller installations, like above the cabinets and in a storage niche. And now we're curious: Would you ever put wallpaper in the kitchen? Or does the idea make you shudder? If the latter, you might have your mind changed by something unusual about the wallpaper in the photo above. More
Do you snip and pin photos of favorite kitchens for future (ah, someday!) inspiration? I do too, and I realized that many of the kitchens I loved had one thing in common: No upper cabinets. It might seem crazy to forego the storage that upper cabinets offer, but there are some significant advantages in return. See ten inspiring kitchens here that ditched the uppers, and read more on why it's sometimes a good idea. More
I have become intimately acquainted with the walls of my new house as over the last several weeks my husband and I and a pack of friends have stripped most of the rooms of wall coverings, plaster, and lathe, exposing the true bones and studs. One side effect of this (besides sore shoulders and scraped hands!) is that the naked structure of my house has given me a whole new perspective on storage. There's so much room in there, between the studs! Here are some inspiring photos showing how you can use all that negative space inside your walls for positive storage solutions.
