What a gorgeous way to stay mindful of what kinds of local produce are in season. And even if you don't garden, we love the connectedness of knowing what farmers and gardeners are sowing each month. Krankpress makes these lovely perpetual calendars for west-coasters from Southern California to the Pacific Northwest. More
Our first Hollywood Farmers' Market visit of the new year was filled with the scent of oranges, mandarins, and lemons, and colorful piles of red, gold, and striped Chioggia beets. We came home with several varieties of each and intend to make some beautiful citrus and beet salads this week. We love this combination and rounded up some recipes featuring our farmers' market finds… More
In October when I got to tour the walnut harvest in California with the California Walnut Board, I was in the offices of Growers Direct Nut Company. They had a color poster on the wall showing all the different varieties of walnuts that grow in California, and two varieties were red. I had no idea that walnut meats could be red! Anyway, last Saturday at the Alemany Farmer's Market, I was thrilled to discover one of the vendors selling red walnuts! More
When Daryle Dutton's local food co-op was shut down to make way for high-rise condos, he and his neighbors found themselves having to get in the car and drive 30 minutes just to pick up a tomato for dinner. With the goal of bringing fresh, local food back to the community, Dutton opened Tempe Farmers Market, a new indoor market in downtown Tempe, Arizona. We stopped by last week to check out the store and pick up some regional specialties. More
The fall is perhaps the one time of year we get ourselves out to a farm. Autumn is prime time for farms, what with all the apple-picking, pumpkin patch, and corn maze fun to be had. Did you go and visit a farm this fall? If so, where did you go? More
On Saturday mornings, nestled into the foothills of the Mojave desert, the Joshua Tree farmers' market welcomes everyone from free-spirited locals to military base families, park rangers, and tourists. We paid a visit to the market last Saturday, picked up some gorgeous persimmons, pomegranates, and other fall gems, and soaked up the friendly, community-oriented vibe. More
It was a beautiful day at the San Rafael Farmer's Market last Sunday. Some late summer produce was still around, such as squash blossoms, berries, tomatoes, and peppers, but it's fading fast. Coming in quickly were the fall items such as walnuts, pumpkins, and fresh olives. More
Last weekend at the San Rafael Farmer's Market, one color stood out: purple! From grapes to carrots to cauliflower, I saw this regal color everywhere. Not that I'm complaining; it is one of my favorite hues! It was just so interesting to see it in places I didn't expect to. After the link are relevant recipes for the items photographed. More
We've always gone for the bigger, more impressive pumpkins at the Hollywood farmers' market, but this year we're utterly charmed by all the minis on sale throughout the market. Perhaps it's because we realized we can actually eat mini pumpkins, not just decorate with them... More
