Today is a holiday and the third day of a long weekend. It is Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, and it is a day we remember and celebrate Dr. King's legacy through service to others. We're taking the day off (mostly!) but look for a couple of new posts later today. Also, read on for one of our favorite quotes about Dr. King (it has to do with food!)... More
Welcome to The Kitchn! Do things look a little different? We gave The Kitchn a fresher, brighter look for 2012, and we've improved the organization of the site. Here's a look at what's new:
• Six major channels that will help you find the content you most enjoy:
Recipes, Advice, Supplies, Kitchens, Drinks, & Gatherings. • Complete index of all our categories for easier browsing. You can see all of our categories here. • A better organized recipe index. • Cambria Bold, the editor of Re-Nest, has moved over to bring us more structured product reviews, as well as tours of farms, artisans, and producers of good food. We're so glad to add her editorial experience to the team!
These are just the first steps, and we're still working behind the scenes cleaning up, organizing, and making the reading experience even better. We have big plans editorially for 2012 — look for even more recipes, tutorials, tours, and kitchen design advice coming soon at The Kitchn.
One thing that isn't changing, however, is you, our readers. You are an essential part of what makes The Kitchn beloved by so many cooks, and we are grateful for your daily contributions to this community. We rely on you, and we hope that you enjoy The Kitchn's new look as much as we do.
Best,

Every year we partner with DonorsChoose.org to raise money for needed supplies in America's public schools. Today I want to share with you a few letters from just one of the 200 classrooms all of you helped last year. We donated money for the textbooks needed to start a Culinary Arts course at a high school in a high-poverty area in California.
Read on to see some letters from the students, and to find out how you can help other classrooms this year through DonorsChoose. We're looking for 500 readers to help out — it doesn't matter how much you give. We just would love to get 500 people engaged with this project! More
Dear Readers, Friends, Designers and Store Owners,
As October gets under way, we want to get the word out to all of you that we're taking submissions for four more days (through Tuesday, October 11th) for our 2011 Holiday Giveaway, which will kick off in November. It's our way of saying thank you to the stores and designers we love. Last year was our biggest year ever, with over 120 gifts given away from small and large homes shops across the country in just four weeks. If you're interested in knowing more, or if you're ready to submit a gift for consideration now, please scroll down to the very bottom of this post.

You asked, we listened. It took a long time, but we finally have printer-friendly recipes. Yes, you can click on the printer-friendly button in our recipes and get a nice clean PDF (no photos, no extra text, no ads) for printing and cooking. We are still retrofitting our large archive of recipes (over 1300!) with the printer-friendly format, but we've slogged through about a year's worth so far, and the rest will follow shortly.
We so appreciate all of you who read The Kitchn and who cook our recipes, and we hope that this makes it just a little easier to cook up good things.
Almost three weeks ago my friend, fellow food writer and mother Jennifer Perillo, lost her husband quite suddenly. Just a week before his death, she and I sat on a sunny lawn with Dixie cups of lemonade, and she told me about how deep and long her love for Mikey runs.
The loss of Mikey is a grand devastation. Most of us can only imagine.
A bunch of folks in the food community are gathering hands, minds and hearts to help Jennie. This post is about how you can help us help her.
You see, one thing I knew long before we ever met in person was how much Jennie loved sharing food with her husband. She tweeted at length about the meals they made as a family, her excusions to the market for ingredients, and their hand-in-hand date nights out.

Happy Presidents' Day! We take this holiday off, here at The Kitchn, but we still have some good cooking lined up for you today. We'll be bringing you some roundups of our best kitchen tours, recipes, and how to tutorials. But first, to kick things off, here's a look back at all things presidential and food-related! From Obama's afternoon snack to Thomas Jefferson's ice cream, here's a roundup of some presidential eats. More
January is over, as well as our month-long focus on Healthy Comfort Food. (Although, honestly, we try to do that year-round!) In February we are going to focus on How To tutorials and kitchen tips, techniques, and cooking basics. We'll bring back some of our favorite pieces from last year's Home Hacks event (videos! tutorials!) and work on more. What do you want to learn in the kitchen, and how can we help? More
