Happy Independence Day from all of us here at The Kitchn. We hope you're enjoying a splendid summer day off (like us!) and cooking up some good food, with good company all around. We'll see you back here Thursday. (And pssst! We're kicking off our annual Small Cool Kitchens contest later this week.) Happy 4th of July!
Hello, readers! We spend a lot of time here at The Kitchn on our readers' good questions and requests, but this week we're devoting every single post to topics specifically requested by our readers. It's a bit of an experiment, and we hope that you play along with us and our loyal readers (and commenters) and see what can find in our readers' requests this week. We pulled our post topics from our readers' requests here and here; we'll do as much as we can with your requests, including pulling up some posts from our archives that have already answered questions you're asking now.
So, welcome to Reader Request Week — we appreciate you all so much! Come along with us...
As editors of The Kitchn, we receive a lot of products for editorial consideration: Small kitchen gadgets, cookbooks, jars of specialty ingredients. Our closet is overflowing, and it's time for us to declutter, so I'm putting together mystery boxes of goodies for our readers. Two lucky readers will get a Kitchn mystery goodie box this month. What will be inside? Cookbooks, a gadget or two, a few little surprises. Read on to enter!
We're getting reports that The Kitchn's RSS feeds are not working properly for some readers. Also, some are seeing double posts in their feeds. This appears to be a problem with Google Reader specifically for people subscribed to the old URL for our RSS feed (which redirects to our new URL). Until we can figure out what is happening on Google's side, we recommend you unsubscribe from the old feed and subscribe directly to the new URL, which seems to fix the problem. Humblest apologies for the trouble! Thanks for reading!
After a week of posting the first ever Apartment Therapy and The Kitchn Photo Contest, readers have chosen a winner. Bethany Nauert, a contributor and photographer extraordinaire based in Los Angeles has garnered the most votes with the above image. This photo is a knock out, and when you think about it, the scene represents the ethos of our sites — It celebrates design, good living and gathering for a meal. It's beautiful.
Congratulations Bethany and cheers to many more great images from all of our team in 2012!
Today is a holiday and the third day of a long weekend. It is Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, and it is a day we remember and celebrate Dr. King's legacy through service to others. We're taking the day off (mostly!) but look for a couple of new posts later today. Also, read on for one of our favorite quotes about Dr. King (it has to do with food!)...
Welcome to The Kitchn! Do things look a little different? We gave The Kitchn a fresher, brighter look for 2012, and we've improved the organization of the site. Here's a look at what's new:
• Six major channels that will help you find the content you most enjoy: Recipes, Advice, Supplies, Kitchens, Drinks, & Gatherings.
• Complete index of all our categories for easier browsing. You can see all of our categories here.
• A better organized recipe index.
• Cambria Bold, the editor of Re-Nest, has moved over to bring us more structured product reviews, as well as tours of farms, artisans, and producers of good food. We're so glad to add her editorial experience to the team!
These are just the first steps, and we're still working behind the scenes cleaning up, organizing, and making the reading experience even better. We have big plans editorially for 2012 — look for even more recipes, tutorials, tours, and kitchen design advice coming soon at The Kitchn.
One thing that isn't changing, however, is you, our readers. You are an essential part of what makes The Kitchn beloved by so many cooks, and we are grateful for your daily contributions to this community. We rely on you, and we hope that you enjoy The Kitchn's new look as much as we do.
Happy New Year's Eve! Do you have something special going on in the kitchen this weekend? A special dinner? A festive brunch? We'd love to hear about it. Enjoy your holiday weekend, and see you back here Tuesday for a fresh batch of brand new posts. Happy New Year's!
Every year we partner with DonorsChoose.org to raise money for needed supplies in America's public schools. Today I want to share with you a few letters from just one of the 200 classrooms all of you helped last year. We donated money for the textbooks needed to start a Culinary Arts course at a high school in a high-poverty area in California.
Read on to see some letters from the students, and to find out how you can help other classrooms this year through DonorsChoose. We're looking for 500 readers to help out — it doesn't matter how much you give. We just would love to get 500 people engaged with this project!
