Entertaining has always stressed me out. From planning to cooking to cleaning and hosting, I worry when things aren't "perfect" and feel guilty if I haven't crafted every bite and sip from scratch. A tendency to make five times more food than necessary magnifies the sense of burden.
The whole enterprise causes so much angst that last year my partner Gregory and I had hardly anyone over. (He, too, is a perfectionist, especially when it comes to housekeeping in our small apartment.) Yet we love our friends and one of our 2014 resolutions is to invite them to our home. I have decided to view at it not as Entertaining with a scary capital E, but as sharing.
