Take a look at this galley kitchen. Looks pretty ordinary, right? It has nice light, and a bold wash of color... and then, turn your head. That's an enormous, gilt-framed painting on the wall, smack dab in the middle of this otherwise modest kitchen. Wow! What a statement! What do you think of this? More
Last week a New York-based photographer, Miho Aikawa, emailed me with a project that she wanted to share with our readers at The Kitchn: a photographic series exploring the way real people eat, and what their mealtime environments look like.
As I paged through the photographs of her project, titled Dinner in NY, I found myself face to face with young professionals, eating on their beds and watching television; a mother feeding her baby while Skyping with grandparents; an extended family at a raucous and lively table; a monk from Myanmar about to share food with his neighborhood. I found the series both touching and insightful and it evoked in me the exact question that Aikawa is asking: "What is a quality dinner?" More
Coffee geeks are intense folks, and there are perhaps few as intense as the good people at Sweet Maria's, the Oakland-based outfit that equips and encourages truly committed coffee lovers to roast their own beans at home. We're big fans of Sweet Maria's, but when browsing their site this week, we stopped short at their 2012 calendar. This isn't your ordinary company calendar. More

Art of the Menu, launched last August by graphic design enterprise Under Consideration, showcases great menus from around the world, and it's a fascinating look at the way we, as eaters, are inspired and enticed by food. Tiny toy figures are hard at work in a world of giant food in Chris Boffoli's photography series Disparity. Humorous and occasionally dark, the scenes depict food in a way that is both beautiful and a little monstrous. The Seattle-based photographer, food writer and avid cook spoke with us about his creative process, the ingredients he works with, and his thoughts on Americans' relationship with food.
