Q: I'm off to Australia for a multi-week adventure and am wondering what foods I absolutely have to try!

I'll be bumming around Melbourne, Sydney, and Cairns and so far my list of things to try and buy only include Bundaberg rum and Lamingtons. Any suggestions?

2011-06-14-Marmite.jpgI think we can all agree that marmite and vegemite can be considered an acquired taste. Personally, I love a thin smear of marmite on a piece of buttered toast, so pungent that it makes my tongue tingle. But love it or hate it, there are still plenty of ways to use this sticky paste in the kitchen. More

Germaine lives with her family in an 1800s-era home in Sydney, Australia. A few years ago she and her husband decided to renovate their plain, awkwardly-shaped kitchen and dining area, and open it up into a light-filled multi-purpose room for cooking, dining, relaxing, and play. We absolutely love the result! It's white, bright, and so inviting. Read on for more from Germaine on the process of renovation, and to see more photos of the kitchen as it is now. More

2011_01_24-Maggies1.jpgI recently received a cookbook to review, Maggie's Harvest by Australian cook Maggie Beer. It's an extraordinarily beautiful book, with a padded linen cover embroidered with leaves and oranges, and stuffed full of lush photographs and brightly colored ribbons. And at 736 pages it's a hefty one, too.

Maggie's Harvest is clearly a labor of love and I have a lot of respect and admiration for that. But between the upholstered cover and the $125 price tag, I find myself a little reluctant to bring it into the kitchen. I wonder, is it OK for a cookbook to be this high-maintenance and expensive? 2010_12_21-Salmon.jpgWe asked some of our favorite food bloggers to share a holiday treat with us over our holiday break. Here's a special treat for our readers from New Zealand and Australia from Jules Clancy of stonesoup. She writes about how it feels to always have Christmas in the summer! She also shares a lovely recipe for baked salmon — a festive yet summer-friendly dish for those of you celebrating the holidays in warmer climes.

Growing up in Australia, Christmas was always a slightly odd holiday. Sure, I loved all the presents and the celebrations and food. But something didn't quite seem right. Like why were so many Christmas songs about riding sleighs through snow? And why did Santa always wear a fur lined suit? But the thing that really didn't add up for me was Christmas lunch. More

2010-05-06-Lamingtons.jpgWhile poking around the Australian sites looking into the origins of Fairy Bread, we stumbled upon another intriguing Australian delicacy. It's called a lamington...or possibly a lemmington...but in either case, we think this dessert that needs to jump the oceans and get into our kitchen! More

2010-05-03-FairyBread.jpgSoft white bread spread with sweet butter and topped with a generous amount of brightly colored sprinkles. Simple, fun, and brilliant. We know this is meant to be a treat for little fairy princesses, but we're pretty enchanted ourselves! More

Cold weather recipes? What? It's June, isn't it? Well, we had an email from a faithful reader named Ivy who lives in New Zealand. Right now she's living through the Southern Hemisphere's opposite seasons: June is cold down there! She says:

I particularly love your season-specific articles as each season changes. Do you think that a few times a year, you could put together a roundup of your favorite articles from opposite seasons, so that us southern-hemisphere folk can get excited about hot chocolate and woolen throws in March, rather than just jealous that the rest of the world is starting their spring?

2009_02_19-WineTop.jpgDon't want to finish the bottle, but don't want to waste the wine?? We have all experienced disappointment when the half bottle of yummy wine enjoyed last night tastes awful the next day. Indeed lots of people don't buy a bottle of wine because they know they won't finish the bottle, and they don't want to waste the remaining wine.

Is wine easy to preserve? There are all sorts of elaborate wine preservation systems that restaurants and bars use, but these can be costly. Here are a few inexpensive tips that I find useful for saving the remaining glass or two in the bottle. More

2009_01_27-TimTamTop.jpgWe don't usually review packaged snack products and sweets, but here's one exception we had to make. Tim Tam cookies are now available in the United States, and this is really more of a cultural event than a snack product release. Tim Tam cookies... errr... biscuits are by far the most popular cookie in Australia and New Zealand, and they've even spawned their own teatime tradition: the Tim Tam Slam. More
