WHY MY SMALL KITCHEN IS COOL: The half-fridge and half-freezer by Sub-Zero forms the base of my kitchen bar/dining table, so that I can cook and entertain dinner guests over some glasses of wine. The coveted NYC dishwasher makes clean-up a breeze. My hanging Edison lights from Schoolhouse Electric on a dimmer set just the right amount of mood.

WHY MY SMALL KITCHEN IS COOL: I would say ... that we got to build it; we spent HOURS working out all the details trying to make the absolute best use of all the space, while keeping it as open and integrated as possible. Everyone else says the red floor or the range hood. Go figure...

WHY MY SMALL KITCHEN IS COOL: Even though our kitchen is really tiny, the two of us have become really smooth at maneuvering around each other while we make dinner. I love that making meals for each other and friends is such an intimate and cozy activity in our small kitchen. Plus a small space means less to clean!

WHY MY SMALL KITCHEN IS COOL: We did it mostly ourselves with the help of some great friends. We used solid wood, milk paints and tung oil for the cabinets, nothing toxic. It is efficient, has everything we need and we have fed up to 50 people out of it.

WHY MY SMALL KITCHEN IS COOL: It's so functional! The knives, small cutting board, pots and pans and aromatics — onions, shallots, garlic — within reach; small amounts of my readily used spices — and sugar and flour! — nearby so I don't have to dig through my crowded spice cabinet except occasionally; towels and big cutting board out of the way but accessible; smaller appliances and bigger bowls and platters under the island, a nice big sink, the gas stove... and it's pretty, too!
