WHY MY SMALL KITCHEN IS COOL: What I love most about the kitchen is the green tile back splash. I wanted to keep the colors neutral--with wood cabinets, stainless steel appliances and slate gray counters and floor tile--so the green of the tile really stands out.

WHY MY SMALL KITCHEN IS COOL: We've used over-sized floor and wall tiles, plus enormous artwork to create a large feel in a very small space. We also blew out a wall to give it an open feeling and included the former mud porch in our new design as a new pantry.

WHY MY SMALL KITCHEN IS COOL: When we bought our summer cottage, the kitchen was creepy. Replacing the floor, yet keeping most of the other fixtures and adding a red IKEA cabinet brought the kitchen into the modern age while maintaining its charm. The best part is the summer ease of cooking simple meals that are always devoured quickly.

WHY MY SMALL KITCHEN IS COOL: Because the kitchen is really just right an alcove in the living room, it's integrated into the rest of the apartment and feels like a Southern-style keeping room. It's the tinest little kitchen, but with some creative storage and balancing acts, I've whipped out multicourse meals (including a full blown Thanksgiving feast with three desserts) and thrown some great parties. Everyone always wants to hang out in the kitchen anyway, so mine is right smack in the middle of the party.

WHY MY SMALL KITCHEN IS COOL: It's bigger than a bread box and the cabinet top is almost hip level rather than the usual knee level. And it has light from the window, which means it's not dark as a cave. For a westerner in China, this qualifies as a spectacular kitchen.

WHY MY SMALL KITCHEN IS COOL: Space, function, color! The opened-up kitchen feels spacious and part of the house now, making it easy to chat with friends while fixing a meal or just having a drink. I often sit and work at the counter because it’s such a comfortable space. At night I especially love to cook by the glow of the undercabinet LEDs bouncing off the cobalt glass tiles. The compact appliances suit the small space and leave a bit of floor space for Oopie. The curved peninsula sits atop a cabinet with drawers facing the dining room, making use of otherwise unreachable space next to the stove. In winter I love cozying up to the radiator.

WHY MY SMALL KITCHEN IS COOL: We took a sad, closed-off galley kitchen and opened it up making the space feel inviting and so much larger. Now I can been cooking and still enjoying company. Also everyone want to hang near the kitchen- now they feel like they are.

WHY MY SMALL KITCHEN IS COOL: I'm not the handiest person out there, but something had to be done about this puke-yellow rental dump dominated by a massive refrigerator. A few coats of paint, a contact-paper backsplash and a mini-fridge later, I have a cheerful oasis filled with details that make me smile - and it all cost me less than $350.
