Q: My grandmother's birthday is coming up and this year I know exactly what to get her. She's been looking for a three-layered cake rack, like you use for tea. She would really like one with removable plates so that it would be easier to wash.
I've found some like this, but they are super modern with chrome and straight lines. My grandmother loves more traditional things. Do you have any good ideas of where I might find one? I'm dying to have a spring tea!

Editor: Emily, the nice thing about the racks with removable plates is that you can insert whatever sort of plates you want! What about getting this simple yet traditional rack from Sur La Table, and adding some pink-sprigged plates, or old-fashioned vintage plates from a thrift store?

Readers, any other good tips for Emily?

POSH Chicago often has interesting plates and might even have a vintage tea/cake rack.

Check etsy.com or ebay.
Amazon might also have something cool.
It's also worth a try to check into Google Shopping because it will search etsy, ebay, amazon, and also bring up other less popular sites that you might not have heard of before. Make sure you get creative with your searches, but not too specific. You might try terms like retro, vintage, antique etc.
Here's one (plates not included) that has the lines of a vintage French cake stand:

If you're feeling crafty, you could coat it in a cream semi-gloss paint and then find three plates that will complete the shabby-chic look.
Try Target, I bought one very similar a few months ago.
Saw some at TJ Maxx on Monday night! :) I also recommend ebay.
I looked for a long time for one like this. I found one that looks exactly like this one at the Christmas Tree Shops. It was $9.99! woo hoo! check their website for locations: http://www.christmastreeshops.com/
Thrift stores--I see them all the time and they are soooo reasonable.
Target! they have some cute, traditional looking ones.
Also if you are in Chicago, there is an outlet called TAG - they usually have them too.
If you know anyone who is a Southern Living At Home consultant, ask her. They have lots of tiered racks like this in their catalog.

target, homegoods or marshalls. Funny, but I had the exact opposite problem a while ago and ended up with a more traditional one when I wanted modern.
Crate and Barrel also has black iron ones, but I'm not sure if they have a version that takes round plates.
