Q: Do you have any recommendations for a couple of good quality oven mitts? I'd like them to be washable in some way, and also not so thick that you can't move your hand once it's inside!
Ours are dirty (since they don't come clean in the washing machine) and charred (since the heat-resistant lining touched the element at the bottom of the oven)!

Editor: Emily, some people (my mother among them) swear by these Ove Gloves:
Yes, they're as-seen-on-TV, and they're really not very pretty, but they are functional and easy to move your hand in. That post linked above also mentions Kevlar gloves and leather campstove gloves, which are quite inexpensive yet look rather awesome.
If we had to choose just based on looks, though, we probably couldn't pass up this awesome series of oven gloves from Envelop, a Belgian company.

Readers, any suggestions for Emily?

Cook's Illustrated rates Ove Gloves way down at the bottom of the scale, saying that they don't really protect your hands from heat.
Though now I see that that rating was from 2005.
Anyway, this is the one they rated highest:
Kool-Tek Protective Apparel Oven Mitt
And this one was almost as high, and much cheaper:
Parvin Flameguard Oven Mitt
(Testing for protection and flexibility.)
What about a basic Crate and Barrel oven mit? That's what I use, and when they get too gross, I throw them out and get a new pair.

I have the Kool-Tek oven mitts that Joan A. referenced, they are great. They are expensive, which is why I bought one at a time, but they do offer excellent protection (mine cover most of the forearm). I'm constantly touching the top element in the oven -- accidentally, of course -- and these mitts saved my arms from many burns. And they wash up nicely in the washing machine.
I'll sometimes get my kitchen supplies and equipment from large suppliers like Tundra Specialties. They're fairly inexpensive and provide restaurant quality stuff. My kitchen is slowly becoming the behemoth I've dreamed of.
These are wonderful. Plus, up to 500 degrees.

I have a pair of these http://www.uncommongoods.com/item/item.jsp?itemId=15009&9gtype=search&9gkw=hotheads%20oven%20mitts&9gad=4696328217&gclid=CKjS8J6b0qACFUFM5QodqzK20A and I really like them, they're small, they grip well and I can throw them in the dishwasher if they get anything on them.
oooh oooh, i totally do! i have two of these (the little devil and mr. zombie) and they are AWESOME: reach all the way up to the elbow, and i've washed them more times than i can count.

I promise, I'm not the seller. I just really do love these.
I used the OveGloves in a commercial bakery for 4 years before they finally died, and then I went and bought another pair.
(I think they're awesome, though this was back when they were a Baker's Catalogue special offer and way before they were available at the WalMart (let alone on TV). Maybe the manufacturing has changed?)
My dad is a welder and he has given me a pair of welding gloves. They are perfect. Alton Brown uses them too.
I like Oxo's oven mitts with the silicone grip. I got mine at Target, but I'm not seeing them on their website - you can probably find them on Amazon, or a lot of retail stores carry Oxo stuff. The silicone grip is very heat resistant, finally no problems pulling cast iron pans out of the oven. But it feels like a regular mitt, I don't really like how the fully silicone ones feel. Nicely flexible and machine washable too.
I agree with Mrs.Catbird. OXO oven mitts are definitely the way to go!

Best ones I've ever had, and I've had plenty.

I have silicone oven mitts that are similar to the Oxo ones, except they are made entirely of silicone so they can be washed in the sink or in the dishwasher. I like them because I can use them for messy tasks (like flipping over a turkey) as well as in the oven. I haven't seem them anywhere online - the silicone ones I've seen are more like grippers than actual mitts - but I think I got them at Target originally.
Any that are made from Nomex, the fireman suit stuff are awesome. Pricey for oven mits, but I've had a couple for at least ten years and they're just now needing to be replaced. That included MANY trips through the washer.
Leather is also good, ala the welders gloves that have been mentioned, but might get a little weird in the wash.
Oven mitts are super simple to make. Choose any heavy cloth for the outside and a thick quilted piece for the back. Insulted curtain material will make a good interior and decorator fabric for the outside. When you get tired of the mitt, you can easily make another one.
I bought some Kitchenaid mitts from Target. They are terry with silicone on the hand area. They weren't expensive and are great. I never feel heat through them.
I agree with ladibug. I got my first pair of welding gloves for the kitchen. They can be hand washed with soap, then they should be air dried slowly - not near a heat source - then oiled - a leather oil is probably best, but olive oil works fine too. When they need a deep clean, get the dry cleaned.
I love them, now I never worry about holding something hot for too long.
I love my silicone mitts they are so easy to keep clean, keep me from burning myself and are just super practical :)
I love the oven mitts that are featured in the post. Anyone know where they're from? Thanks!
