If you're looking for an affordable table runner for the upcoming entertaining season, there may be no better option than making your own from burlap and twine — like this lovely example from The Wedding Chicks.
It can be casual or fancy — depending on your dinnerware and stemware — and can be used any time of year. On sale burlap can run $4 a yard, so that means for as little as $12 (plus the cost of twine) you can creatively and affordably add a touch of texture to a 78" long table.

I like this idea for the desert table on Thanksgiving. Any idea where I can buy burlap?
The burlap shown in the picture is landscaper grade, you can buy rolls of it at any home improvement or hardware store for very little $$. However, that type of burlap will shed, a lot.
The smarter thing to do is use jute fabric, or fabric grade burlap. Joann Fabric carries it, it's not super expensive, but it's more than the flower bed junk. Use a coupon.
We used burlap runners for our wedding this August. I loved them! Purchased from www.onlinefabricstore.net
They have lots of different grades, colors, and types. If you are planning to sew or embellish it at all, go for the higher end stuff since the plain old burlap was a nightmare to sew (my poor mother-in-law sewed ribbons to 17 of them!)
Some people that have really bad hay fever can be affected by this fabric, just so you know.
