- What makes your small kitchen so cool?
- I love that it is a kitchen of memories from floor to ceiling (literally). It was our first big project as husband and wife in our newly bought condo; I designed the kitchen and my husband made it happen.
- Describe a challenge you've overcome or a smart resource you've found for your kitchen.
- What wasn't a challenge? We gutted the whole thing. We ripped out the hard wood floors (we got a lot of shrieks from our family and friends), raised the ceiling (from a mere 6.75ft tall to 7.5ft), ripped out the old cabinets, and made the entire kitchen our own. I would say the most worthwhile challenge to overcome was raising the low ceiling. We got almost an extra foot, providing more storage and overall breathing room.
- What's your favorite meal to cook here?
- I have been trying to impress my husband again and again with different recipes, but by far our most favorite is a fairly recent one that we both went crazy over: the Zesty Tortellini Salad. I found it here on The Kitchn; it was one of my first meals I made in our new kitchen. I changed it up a bit, using Italian Sausage Tortellini instead of cheese, and I added olives and artichoke hearts. We absolutely LOVE it. I have never heard my husband rave so much about my cooking--besides when I make pies!

Small Cool Kitchens
You have my dream kitchen and a space similar to the bones in my kitchen. Beautiful job, and thanks for the inspiration!
How cute are those herbs over the sink?! And is that a little recipe file folder over the dishwasher on the counter? Great idea. I have a very disorganized (and kind of gross) file folder of recipe print outs. I finally divided the sweet treats from the savory but more organization is in order.
I think the recipe file folder you see, Heypielady, is in fact a set of cutting boards by Joseph Joseph.
Available here, and other retailers.
What did you end up doing for the floor? It's pretty, but I can't tell what it is :)
I'm also interested in what you used to put the herbs over the sink. Looks great!
Love the fresh herbs over the sink. I am going to do that in my kitchen too! Great idea Bryce!
Thank you!!
The "file" above the dishwasher is indeed the Joseph Joseph cutting board. My next project is to create binders of my favorite recipes from all of my magazines I've collected over the years though!
The herbs--I got inspired to add the herbs after feeling like the space above the sink wasn't used to its full potential. I love using fresh herbs in my recipes, so I wanted to think of something to hold my herbs. I browsed through my local IKEA an found these awesome tubs/pots that clip on over a metal rod that they also sold that can screw into the cabinets. We buy the herbs from Home Depot which are a perfect fit for these pots. It makes the kitchen smell so good!!
The flooring-- We are SO happy changing from hardwood to tile. Our kitchen used to get so hot with the window, but now it's great. We went through a lot to get our flooring. We fell in love with the porcelain tile at a local flooring store but after trying to place the order we found out the maker had discontinued the tile. We tried finding something like it, trying at least 20 stores, and trying to find it online. Finally we got ahold of the company itself (Bedrosian tile) and they managed to round up some 24"x24" of the exact color we wanted. After that my husband found a local water jet cutter who offered a great price to cut them down to 12"x24". Well worth it all!! It's just a matte grey tile with no texture and no flake/sparkle.
How beautiful! I love the subway tile backsplash and the holder to stack all of your coffee mugs. Did you find that somewhere or was it a DIY project? So cute!
WOW!!! What a challenge! You guys did an amazing job!! looks fantastic :)
This is by far the best kitchen reno I've ever laid my eyes on. I love your double oven, and hung plants over the sink is just simple and amazing. Good work!!!
I love how sleek it is but it also has pops of color that make it fun as well. Bien joué!
Love those counters -- what are they??
@jill.ratliff.89 -- Thanks! I wish I made the coffee mug stack..! It is was actually a housewarming gift to us from our cousin, but I believe he got it from Cost Plus World Market.
@Alexia -- Thank you! We are so happy with them! They are Caesarstone Quartz countertops in "Raven" color. A Charcoal gray with no flake/shimmer.
Like many others, I would love to know/see better how you are hanging the pots of herbs. What a great way to maximize your counter space and kittie-proof too. Lovely kitchen!
Nice sink!
Very nice! Love the double oven range!
Extraordinarily Fresh!!! Raising the ceiling was brillant! Well planned layout and the end result is refreshing and uncluttered. The faucet is elegant and the herbs are likely fragrant. Introducing fragrance in the kitchen is exceptional. I especially live how the glossy white paint illuminates the sunshine. Very well done! The "Bryce is Right" ...
I agree with "BrokenAnkle"... "Bryce is Right!". What a gorgeous kitchen! Beautiful layout and amazing design! You can tell a lot of thought was put into this kitchen. Good Luck to you... You really have an eye for design!
Love the subway tile and herbs above the sink!
Nice Lidingo Kitchen. Well done!
Lovely kitchen, almost identical to mine (I recently remodeled and used the same IKEA kitchen) and the same appliances. And the floor is identical too!! Since we seem to have sister kitchens, if you're ever considering a pull out trash system, I used "simplehuman" two bins (trash and recycling.) It's just great to keep it neatly under the sink, and (considering that my sink is 30" -- not the farm one you got), it's amazing it shared space with my water filtration system (that also is kept in the under the sink cab.) Your trashcan is beautiful, but I just thought of sharing this tip (my husband and I looked for lots of other options and this worked super well for us!)
Is the sink Ikea Domsjo? If yes, do you instal additional enforcement on the dishwasher side? My contractor is not very sure of installing a dishwasher besides a Domsjo due to its weigh. I have a similar design, but mine ends at the dishwasher, and I have my fridge at the other end. I was not sure of putting my Domsjo there, due to the reason that it may look awkward with a huge sink, and possible problem with its weigh but after seeing yours, I'm determined. Anyway, mine is Stat.
I love this and want to replicate it in my kitchen. What's the source on the stove and fridge? It looks like the fridge has two drawers instead of doors?
As someone that lives in rentals and longs for hardwoods, I can certainly understand the shrieks, but the finished product is fantastic and that tile works really, really well. Awesome job!
Great Job!!!!
Thank you for all of your compliments & feedback!! It truly does mean the world to us!
To reply to a few comments specifically:
@Movetoinbox: Thanks!! How fun that our kitchen has a sister! :) Would love to see a picture of yours! We haven't seen the pull-out option of the Simplehuman trash/recycling bin you're referring to! I'll definitely look it up! The one we currently have is Simplehuman as well, but it's quite the focal point in our kitchen right now so it would be nice if we could fit a pull-out under our sink! Thanks again!
@Rosf: It is a Domsjo sink! (It took about 4-5 months to finally get it--worth the wait). There was no issue with having the Dishwasher next to the sink as the Diswasher doesn't take on any of the load. The diswasher has a couple millimeters of space beneath the Counters. The Sink cabinet should be strong enough as is along with the countertops to support it. It's so convenient having it so close to the Dishwasher..! If you can do it I would!
@Mimikota: Thank you! The range and fridge are both KitchenAid. The range is an electric double-oven (love it!) with gas stove-top. The fridge is the French Door model with an accompanying fridge/chiller drawer, and a freezer drawer on the bottom. The fridge drawer is nice because you can actually see into it from the inside of the French doors--the bottom shelf is glass!
@Amandasg: Thank you for the compliments on the tile! The only way I was able to really get myself to move away from the hardwood floor was the fact that the previous owners really dinged them up. There were chunks missing by the sink and dents/dog scratch marks throughout. The tile really makes a difference in the summer too. With the hardwood, I don't know if I'd want to be cooking as much as I'm able to with tile. That window brings in a lot of heat! We kept the hardwood that is just outside of the kitchen, into the open dining/living room.
Thanks again!! We are so thankful for your votes!!!
Efficient and eligant !
Love your design!
Very efficiently designed but I am not surprised. My favorite are all the Herbs above the sink.
Ano Fekete
Someone mentioned, much more diplomatically, the single flaw that makes me cringe in this kitchen. The waste bin has 'pride of place' under the window... a pull out system would be such a boon. I promise you'd love it. Both functionally and visually...'
Otherwise. Spot on for function and aesthetic appeal.
I agree with Fredanz! Your kitchen is by far my favorite... it has such a beautiful airy quality to it, but the trash can detracts from it! The shape of the window is just so amazing, nothing should be in the way of it! But otherwise, your kitchen is just perfect! It's so soothing! Love it!
Beautiful space! Warmth & coziness amid sleek simplicity!
That stainless steel tray insert in the sink looks like a cool tool. What is it?
Are we to vote on Windows or Kitchens? If Windows...Check out the International Winner's kitchen!
Yay! Congratulations on your win!!!! Enjoy the memories you are making in your Kitchen of Memories!!!
I just want to say thank you SO much to everyone who voted for our kitchen!! It was a really fun process and we are very thankful to have won!! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!
No wonder your kitchen won - it is lovely in so many ways. Congratulations!
Is your dishwasher a KitchenAid also?
LOVE the herbs hung over the sink! I'm surprised they do so well without a very direct source of sunlight. Gives me hope to do something similar in our kitchen.
This comment was posted earlier, but I was unable to find a response. What is the tile that you used for your floor and where did you find it?
Thanks
@BWT - Thank you so much! Yes the dishwasher is KitchenAid :)
@Binca08 I wrote a response but I think you have to click "show more" to see what I wrote (I wrote a lot of responses and it was at the bottom). Here's what I wrote:

I love this kitchen. It's so lovely - it's going in my inspiration file for sure!
I am debating on getting the double version of that same sink at Ikea... But I am so apprehensive; does it get all those weird gray scratches on it? Oh, though, it is such a thing of beauty. :)
@LisaLisaDonut We loooove our sink! It hasn't gotten a single gray scratch on it and it cleans beautifully! The only reason why we didn't get the double (we wanted to so badly!) was because we wanted some more counterspace since we didn't have much to begin with.
I voted for you, yea!!!We have a small kitchen in our new home, very narrow, but, we'll work with it. I have been looking for those tiles on your backsplash, we had subway tile in our old home, I miss them,Please let me know and congrats on sticking to your dream!
@JoniBoni Thank you for your vote!! :D We were thrilled when we found our subway tiles! They're smaller than the standard subway tiles and they come in 12"x12" sheets. We actually stumbled across them while looking for standard subway tiles at Home Depot. I don't have the exact brand right now but I can look it up later tonight :)
@joniboni They are Dal Tile Rittenhouse Square 2x4 Brick Joint tiles, in White. I believe they are only available in-stores. Hope that helps!
@BRYCEBBA, Congratulations ... so thrilled for you (especially since I voted for your space! ;-)) You may have missed my question I posted a while ago:
What is the stainless steel insert by your sink?
@LifeAbundant Thank you so much!! And I apologize--I totally missed that question! I hope you come back here to see my answer: It's actually a special Domsjo "sink strainer" from IKEA that is made to specifically for their Domsjo sink (which we have). It is so nice for holding small products or silverware when washing larger products, etc. in the sink, so they don't get lost down the drain or hidden under something else. I have yet to use it for food, but I'm so happy with it! Thanks again so much for your vote!! :D
