Store Review: McKinnon's Meat Market
Boston

2008_08_15-McKinnons1.jpgWe were on a quest for boneless beef short ribs for a recipe that we had to make. (You know how it is.) We'd tried Stop & Shop, Whole Foods, and the slightly sketchy grocery down the street, and we were starting to get desperate.

Then a friend suggested McKinnon's in Davis Square. We walked in, and in about five minutes, we'd found exactly what we needed...and a whole lot more!

Local Farm Profile: Green Meadows Farm in Massachusetts

2008_08_12-GreenMeadows1.jpgLooking for an escape from the city last weekend, we hoofed it an hour north of Boston to visit the lush pastures of Green Meadows Farm in Hamilton, Massachusetts. After chowing down on BLT's made with all local ingredients, we toured the farm and chatted with farm manager Andrew Rodgers.

Edible Boston: Making Wine in the Land of the Puritans

2008_07_16-EdibleBostonSpring.jpgMassachusetts will surprise you with the food and produce you can find here, as we've seen.

But wine?!

We have to admit that wine is not something we'd ever expect to find "locally grown."

But an article in the most recent issue of Edible Boston says otherwise. In Will Oenophiles Embrace What's Being Made Here? Clare Leschin-Hoar explains that Massachusetts wine-production is challenging, but far from impossible!

Chard, Kale, and Spinach: What To Do With Hearty Greens

2008_06_26-HeartyGreens.jpgWe don't know about you, but up in New England, our CSAs are still primarily consisting of hearty greens like swiss chard, kale, and spinach!

Don't get us wrong, we love these greens! But...one does tend to run out of culinary inspiration after a while.

Before that happens, we thought we'd share a few of our favorite preparations and find out some of yours: What do you do with your leafy greens?

Boston Store Review: C-Mart

2008_06_26-CMartReview.jpgIt's a bit crazy. It's a bit dirty. It can get a bit crowded.

But C-Mart definitely delivers.

Just a hop and skip down the street from the Boylston T Stop, Boston Common, and Emerson College, this Chinese grocery provides us with everything from durian fruits to some of the freshest seafood around.

Boston Food Event Report: American Craft Beer Fest 2008

2008_06_25-Beerfest2008.jpgThis past weekend, we neatly lined up with a few hundred of our closest friends, received our 2 oz. tasting cup with suitable grace, and proceeded to sprint into the tasting hall without a backward glance.

Yes, it was Beer Fest 2008.

Hosted by the Beer Advocate and Harpoon Brewery, this event gathered 75 brewers from all over the United States offering 300 craft beers between them. No, we were not quite able to sample all 300 beers. But we did make a nice dent in the selections!

Read on for tasting notes and top beer picks from the event!

Boston Store Review: China Fair

2008_06_06-ChinaFair.jpgHome to discount housewares and party supplies galore, China Fair is the kind of store in which you could easily spend an entire afternoon wandering the dusty aisles and not even realize it.

We went to the Porter Square store in search of a basic set of plates to replace our mismatched Goodwill collection, and came away with our arms laden. Our wallets, however, were still comfortably full. No buyer's remorse here!

Massachusetts Farmer's Markets Are Open!

2008_05_20-MAFarmerMarket.jpgNew Englanders, we can finally stop ogling the produce from the rest of the country and start enjoying our own!

After all the talk on this site these past few weeks, we're hoping to score some ramps and fiddlehead ferns later this afternoon. We'll also be picking up some seedlings to round out our container garden.

What do you have your sights set on?!
