Our judges appreciated the simplicity and inspiring qualities in Helen's beautiful galettes, and they were also drawn to the bittersweet fruit and chocolate. For all their comments, read on...
Dorie Greenspan: I thought this recipe was particularly interesting because it wasn’t a completely chocolate recipe. (Actually, given how much I love chocolate, I’m having a hard time believing that I just wrote that.) The recipe, which I found simple, pretty and very bittersweet, is not as intricate as some of the others, but I like that it can be a base recipe, a jumping-off point for new ideas and new recipes. I think this recipe will inspire many other bakers to create their own mini galettes in the flavors they like best and I love anything that encourages people to bake more.
Sarah Phillips of Baking 911: By now you can tell that I love innovative and everyday recipes, which one can use and tailor to their own needs and use what’s fresh and in season. I think Helen did an excellent job in showing us a way to make a breath taking dessert that does not have an ingredient list a mile long, and can served in a casual or dressed-up event. It’s always important for a home cook to have an arsenal of “wow” dessert recipes that one can have at their disposal for last minute guests.
