We're anticipating some busy days ahead as we settle back into our fall routines. To keep both our spirits and our energy up, we've been gathering some fresh new ideas for grab-and-go breakfasts that travel well and won't make a mess. Sweet or savory, we've got you covered.
• Dorie's Jammers from Lottie + Doof - While perhaps technically a cookie, I say the jam and streusel topping makes these count as breakfast.
• Chewy Nut and Cereal Bars from Gourmet - Eat your cereal without a spoon!
• Frittata Bites with Chard, Sausage, and Feta from Epicurious - These can be made ahead and eaten warm or cold.
• Oat Cakes from 5 Second Rule - From Heidi Swanson's newest cookbook!
• Pancake Souffle Muffins from Fine Cooking - I'm thinking of skipping the syrup and eating this with a spoonful of jam.
• Savory Buckwheat Cake from The Edible Perspective - Such an interesting idea!
• Baked Chocolate Doughnuts from Lara Ferroni - A healthier version of the doughnut? I'll take it.
• Oatmeal Banana Pecan Cookies from Made By Melis - These hearty "cookies" will definitely keep us going until lunchtime!

At one point those frittata bites were published in BA, and I have made them twice now for different gatherings. The first time I served them as recommended, the second time i upped the recipe and served it as a casserole in a 9x13. Crowd pleasers either way!
Thanks so much for including me in this list! http://edibleperspective.com
Our new back-to-school favorite are the Thick, Chewy Granola Bars from Smitten Kitchen (smittenkitchen.com).
We've eaten three batches in a week and a half and I noticed this afternoon that I need to make more again. Seriously yummy and so many delicious variations mentioned in the comments. My version included pecans, cranberries, unsweeted coconut flakes and almond butter.
I (and my two hungry teenagers) recommend them highly.
Granola bars, granola bars, granola bars :) Even when I have to resort to the pre-packaged kind, there are still some nice options. Unlike the doughnut/muffin/cookie(ish) options - granola bars don't go all crumbly if you're walking and eating. Also, even though they still have a highish amount of sugar, they're also usually packed with fiber and nuts. This will take longer to digest, give you a good jolt of protein for long-term energy (instead of just a short-term sugar rush), and still satisfy a morning sweet tooth. When the weather is cool enough, I stash some in my car for those crazy mornings where there just isn't time for breakfast (or sometimes dinner). I'm always recommending this 'trick' to younger co-workers who complain of a lack of time for a snack/meal between school and work.
