One of the best purchases I made in my rental kitchen makeover was to purchase two IKEA clamp lamps for the wall by the island. Like most rentals, my overhead lighting is subpar, I have no under-cabinet lighting, and while I do have windows, that doesn't really help me when it gets dark out!

Since then I've realized that clamp lamps are a totally brilliant, doable, and budget-friendly necessity for small kitchens — or really, any kitchen! Here's why.

No more working in a dim kitchen! A clamp lamp offers an immediate spotlight on your workspace, into the dark recesses of the pantry, or to the back of your cabinet. You can screw the lamp into the wall, as I did with the RANARP lights from IKEA, but most clamp lamps can just be clipped on a shelf, table, window sill, or countertop, and plugged into an outlet.

You can go as cheap or expensive with clamp lamps as your budget allows. Choose a super cheap classic like this one from Home Depot, or scale up to an arty version like the one shown directly above, or something like this awesome brass and wood version from Fab. (Love!)

It's such an easy solution for a maddening problem (not enough light).
