What about AMAZINGPALEO.com? Mariel has a ton of really delicious healthy recipes! :)
In my opinion, any diet that is ranked at the bottom for overall health and considered unsafe by experts (see the US News and World Report findings.... http://health.usnews.com/best-diet/best-healthy-eating-diets?page=3) should not be considered in a HEALTHY food competition regardless of how popular it is. I'm sorry, but a paleo diet is just not good for long-term health. I'm going to stick with a plant-based diet for life longetivity.
To those who are maligning the paleo plan, please note that you will find quite a lot of variance in opinion and practice among health and nutrition "experts". Many nutrition studies are funded by large corporations and are skewed at best and, at worst, dangerous. Some nutritionists tout a whole foods, plant-based diet while others include more animal foods. It depends on the perspective taken by the person as well as the client's genetic history and physical condition. The paleo plan, for instance, can work really well for a Type II Diabetic.
Pseudo or made-over desserts or junk foods are still junk foods and treats regardless of whether they're paleo, vegan or omnivorous, but the paleo diet in essence -- meat, eggs, fish, produce, seeds, nuts -- is healthy. Reduced sodium and nitrate/nitrite/sugar-free bacon can be part of a healthy diet. There's absolutely no clinical evidence to show saturated fat contributes to disease (most of what we know is based on lofty research.) Inuits and those who live in extremely cold climates consume a lot of saturated fat and little fibre. Surprisingly, Western diseases (heart disease, heart attacks, etc) are nearly non-existent within those groups.
In the same breath, you'd be hard-pressed to convince me that refined and heavily processed vegan substitutes are a healthier alternative to the originals.
I feel this list mostly stresses real foods and cooking over alternatives, and that I'm totally for.
To me, this voting makes me feel very much out-of-sync with this blog's readership.
That is, after being a daily reader of The Kitchn for 4 or 5 years, I just don't see this (The Kitchn) as being a blog that fans of the paleo diet bother with...
Considering the rampant obesity epidemic and how many people have type 2 diabetes, it's no wonder that a "caveman" diet blog is winning this competition. The public is confused - or apathetic - as to what's healthy and what's not. Next year someone might as well nominate the McDonald's Blog - if one exists. Most Americans love McDonald's - so I bet it would get a lot of votes. They have salads, and I'm sure you can get some ice water upon request - so that can be the excuse for claiming it's healthy when McDonald's wins its prize.
I didn't expect my blog to win - as there are far healthier blogs on the list (admittedly, I often write about vegan cupcakes!)... but I was hoping that one of the many plant based blogs would surpass the caveman diet blog, as so many other blogs listed really DO promote good health. Sadly, it looks like the "Healthiest Food Blog" prize this year is going to a blog that raves about fried eggs and fried bacon... and lots of other meals that I'm sure Paula Dean would approve of... before she got ill.
I strongly encourage everyone to check out the "runner-ups" on the list for some healthy and delicious fare. They're the real winners in my book.
