The caramel ginger spread made from ground Belgian cookies known as speculoos has sparked a major debate in Belgium. The stuff is so popular and well-liked that this story made international news!
It's a showdown between Lotus Bakeries brand cookies (a.k.a. the cookies Delta airlines made famous) and two rivals. Each are so intent on patenting speculoos spread, which is comprised of ground speculoos cookies, that they have brought the battle to court. What does it mean to the rest of the world? Speculoos spread is more than worth trying!
Have you tried speculoos spread?

Yes I have had the spread - delicious!!!!!
I had a roommate from Holland who missed this stuff so much, she got her boyfriend to send her three jars from home. When they arrived, one of the jars had broken, and she spend an hour or so trying to save what was left in the broken one!
I love Lotus speculoos and the spread (especially the crunchy kind) is diabolically delicious.
Where can I get it in the U.S.?
@hipcheck -- Biscoff is the US distributor and you can order it from their website.
Biscoff Speculoos Spread
I'm excited for when they start distributing that spread more widely in retail stores. And if you want to try making your own spread, Walgreens carries the cookies for something like $1 a package...mine is never as creamy though. Sorta like how homemade Nutella never has the same consistency of the stuff you buy.
I've tried the speculoos spread on a Wafels & Dinges wafel in NYC...so delicious! I can't wait to go back to the East Coast to get some more!! =)
YAY SPECULOOS!
My husband is from Belgium and makes sure the spread is part of the care packages his family sends from time to time! It is really delicious - alphaville is right about the crunchy stuff! Hubby's last trip to Belgium and the Netherlands yielded a new find - Speculoos chocolate bars! They were kind of a let down, though...
After many attempts I nailed making Biscoff cookies at home. SO good.
@jmorri26 - Uhhh.... you ARE going to share that recipe, right?
lol its actually at home in my recipe binder...as soon as I remember to snag it, I'll post it here. Only thing I haven't got down is mine spread like mad when they bake, but the flavor is dead on.
you can get liege waffles and speculoos at Shaky Alibi in LA...
My mother-in-law bought my husband and me two jars of the Biscoff paste (for our anniversary) at our local Kroger here in Atlanta. It's delicious but looks SO MUCH like peanut butter that the flavor is still a bit of a shock!
Wow! I am a peanut butter lover for life...but... my daughter studied abroad in France this past summer and brought some of this spread home... its is quite possibly almost better than Arrowhead Mills Creamy Organic Valencia Peanut Butter that I have consumed for over 20 years! She left for UC Santa Barbara and took it with her...booohooo...
Hey everybody, I just happened to come across this post and wanted to let EVERYONE know Speculoos is now available at Trader Joe's but buy it quick cause the person that I talked to there said it might just be a seasonal thing for Christmas time :/
jmorrie26, please share the recipe :)
Cost Plus World Markets recently had the Speculoos paste. For anyone living in the Portland OR area, The Dutch Store in Beaverton also carries it.
