This bright, happy kitchen belongs to Bonnie, a crafter, gardener, and Etsy seller in North Carolina who bought her grandmother's house and turned it into a modern, no-doilies-in-sight kind of place. Ok, maybe there's a doily in there somewhere, but isn't it inspiring? Click to see more before and after shots, including those great IKEA countertops.
Bonnie saved herself a lot of money by keeping the existing cabinets and just updating the hardware. She replaced the dated counters with IKEA butcherblock and switched out the flooring, which also makes a huge difference in keeping the room calm and bright.
We love the shelving that flanks her dining table; Bonnie keeps "good looking" food (like pasta or grains) in IKEA storage jars, mixed with a few vintage ones, and stashes less attractive boxes and bags in the cupboards below.

• See Bonnie's entire house (and more kitchen pictures!) at her blog, Going Home to Roost.
If you browse Bonnie's house tour, you'll see she also removed a wall next to the dining area, which opened up the space and let in tons more light. Go take a look—and don't miss the beautiful turquoise fireplace.

Straw Mat from The ...

Oh, the before kitchen was quite nice as well! I liked the coziness of the yellow kitchen. Very good job with the new kitchen too, though!
Nice work Bonnie! I especially love the serene dining area.
Beautiful new kitchen! I have the linoleum from the before pics in my rental kitchen, which I do NOT love.
Very nice transformation.
Just to pick a nit: the headline is misleading. This is not an IKEA makeover. An IKEA makeover, the way I see it, would have used their cabinets. Not just countertops or storage items.
this is a really nice improvement! i'd love to see a fun light fixture in the kitchen; maybe a chandelier painted yellow?
Nice and bright and clean-looking and subtle. Good job!
Adorable!
oh now that kitchen look just so welcoming! its says "good morning, i've made you some fresh coffee and madeleine cookies - why dont you take a long hot shower and i'll be here when you are ready"
oh how i wish my kitchen said that to me!!! mine currently says "i dont want to be up this earlier either..."
just getting that wallpaper border down was a huge improvement- it looks really nice!
I LOOOOOOVE those owls on the bookshelf - anyone know where they are from!?!?!?!?!
the owls used to be available at anthropologie, not sure if they carry them anymore though. was just there yesterday & don't recall seeing them.
Pearl River has them in Brown, Grey and White sets.

if the link does work, just search for 'owl' and they come up.
