My wife and I purchased a small (under 600 square feet) cottage in northern Michigan from my great aunt Bernice. It had been unused for more than two years, and working with local builder, we gutted the interior, added a second floor, and designed a very serviceable and visually stunning kitchen space in under 120 square feet. The island is great for entertaining groups or just our small family!
Make the most out of every possible space. In our situation, we knew we had to work in a tight floor plan, but we maximized every square foot with functional cabinetry, and the island gives us many options rather than a traditional counter or kitchen table.
My favorite meal to cook in my kitchen::
Breakfast! Our cottage is the perfect summer/winter retreat and the stairs leading down from the second floor enter right into the kitchen. I love getting up early, making coffee, and preparing breakfast for our guests. The smiles on their faces when they come down the stairs and smell the bacon makes it all worthwhile!
