We love kitchen renovations and before and afters — they're so satisfying, don't you think? Take a look at this breakfast nook transformation; it's particularly dramatic! It started with this, and then...
Ta-da! What a transformation — you can hardly believe it's the same space! But it didn't take gobs of money. The homeowners created a much more luxurious look by lining those narrow windows with freshly-painted trim. This makes them look fresher and more luxe.
This transformation also lets more people sit in the little nook, and it has one other practical benefit: Those benches flip open, giving the homeowners tons of extra kitchen storage.

I love the way the benches use the space! great idea.
I probably would have left the wood trim on the windows, though. I like wood trim.
Why the round table with straight bench seats? Seems like a rectangular table would have been a better use of the space. From the picture it looks like only two people could make use of that table. Fashion over function, for sure.
It looks really beautiful, but unless they only plan on breakfast for two I don't know why they chose a circular table. With a rectangle it would be easier to have guests over without someone being two feet from their food.
Very nice! But I would have chosen for a rectangular table :-)
Love the floor! And the white! But I will def echo... why the round table? Also, maybe would have put in more lights...
Still a beautiful room.
Wow!
I love how the white trim unifies those windows. I thought they were sort of an eyesore in the before and they look so purposeful and great in the after!
We have a breakfast nook with a rectangular table. The corners make it pretty difficult to slide into the "back" seat (if that makes sense). Rectangle might give you more surface area, but circle is more functional, IMO.
Beautiful renovation!
The finishes and furniture are quite lovely (particularly the light and window coverings!) but the function has certainly suffered. I wonder why they didn't run the bench across the back of the nook, perhaps planning for a future rectangular table...?
If you look at all the pictures on the site, you'll see that the benches wrap around in a u-shape. So, the round table isn't *completely* useless...
really reallllly nice
I'm pretty sure that the round table makes it easier for people to get in and out (it's hard to slide into a seat when there are cushions on the benches).
I liked the before windows better. I can't believe they painted that beautiful wood. Otherwise, this is a good remodel.
I love it, and have been investigating building benches in our eating area. But WOW am I surprised by the price! A non-encosed bench in one corner (2 sides) has been estimated at $2500. Built in benches, that include storage, have been estimated at twice that. Dream dashed. I would love to see the price breakdown of this lovely remodel.
Lunabee, kitchen cabinets that are sized to be installed over the fridge, etc., are just about the right height for a bench--buy a few of those at home depot or wherever you go, line them up, DIY or get a simple bench top made for them, trim them out and paint as desired, and you will quickly have a nice seating area with storage for much less than $2500. I believe This Old House has a tutorial on this idea, but there are lots of them on the web. We made a window seat like this, and it was simple, fast, and worked great!
Oh my. I love - and want - it.
I particularly love the colours!
This favours form over function. I don't find the benches to be great use of space - they are the only use of space that works, and any homeowner who can read would have had this idea naturally. I, too, am baffled by the round table. It is very pretty, but not at all practical.
Love the paint and will use a somewhat toned down version of it in my bathroom.
I LOVE the window transformation. The "before" windows looked really '80s (or early '90s, however you want to say it), especially with the micro mini-blinds. Of course, I love wood molding just about anywhere, so that's just me.
I also love the dark floor and white everything else. And I LOVE the idea of more kitchen storage. Think of all the seldom-used roasters and canning pots and specialty cake pans you could fit in there!
The round table makes perfect sense in this space. As others have noted, a rectangular table would make it much more difficult to get around the corners of the bench. And I see no evidence that this table couldn't seat four at least as easily as the former set up with just the addition of a chair on the open end. Beyond which, benches are often much more inviting than chairs and are more likely to be used for lounging, reading, or playing games. The addition of the storage space makes this change a no-brainer. Better looking and much more functional!
Oooh! Super purty!
Yowza, it's beautiful!
Lunabee— we picked up cabinets made to go above a fridge at IKEA years ago to fashion a kitchen window seat. My husband is handy and so he could install it. We paid for a local upholsterer to make a cushion for the top and it was maybe hundreds, but not thousands of dollars. And my first thought was how easy it would be to move around a round table! I think it's a great idea. How benches would be considered form over function I cannot understand. So funny how there are 2 distinct and opposite reactions to this solution! Looks like a huge improvement to me.
Oh wow! Amazing. Although, I kind of liked the "before" light fixture, at least in the photo, but maybe it's ugly in person. I am always amazed at the things people can do to to transform spaces. This is so inspiring.
And I love wood trim (we have miles of it through the downstairs of our house, and I'd never paint it), but in this case, I think building out the trim around the windows was brilliant and gives the space much more character than it had before.
Wow. At first I thought they'd actually changed the window to a single window. Beautiful job.
I'm not so convinced about a rectangular table. The round table looks great and it's much easier to climb into this kind of nook with a round table than with a rectangular one - I speak from experience here. If you only need 2 or 3 seats (it's only a breakfast nook, not a dining room) the round table would work well.
Holy moley, that's gorgeous! Any DIYer could do it pretty easily.
Round table and painted trim are great. I like that the table is a bit unexpected.
Totally surprised at this transformation...in a good way! Love the round table! The space looks really cozy and comfortable and the blue on the walls is stunning.
Would love to see paint color names and a price breakdown!
i'm so torn!
family ties is my favourite show - ergo i love the before. but the after is very attractive :o)
love the makeover but I can't help but feel that the functionality of the room has been diminished -- rectangular benches but with a round table? And unless the table was chosen for a specific height, I'd imagine actually eating anything on it while sitting on lower benches that can't be scooted in, would make for a rather uncomfortable and awkward dining experience.
It looks great. I can understand the reasons for the round table.
But if you lean back on those benches, you get the windowsill in the small of your back. Not going to encourage lingering over a cup of coffee on a lazy weekend morning, IMO.
Beautiful!! love the colors! Where did you get the bench cushions? Or possibly advice on making some? I am in need of bench cushions :)
Yowza! That's an amazing transformation from Cheap 80s Bleh to Luxe Timeless Wow. I'm impressed.
To all of the commenters fussing about the seating - did you notice that the nook only sat two before? Now it'll seat at least three, more if people don't mind squishing. The round table also inserts a new circular form into a very rectangular space, adding to the sense of luxury and interest.
I'm guessing that beautiful round table wasn't cheap, but then again, the benches were probably cheaper than the equivalent chairs, so overall it's still affordable.
Wow! Simply inspiring!
Can someone please tell me where I can buy that beautiful table?
Thanks
