Ancient cabinets, a mishmash of appliances, and limited counter space created the perfect storm for clutter in this small kitchen. After a small fire, a carefully planned remodel was called for. Updated cabinets, swank new countertops, and loads of additional storage transformed the kitchen into a well-organized, functional, and beautiful room.

Kricken and James Yaker of the Portland, Oregon-based design build firm, Vanillawood, stepped in to rehab the kitchen after the fire. The main challenge was adding additional storage while working within the constraints of the original kitchen's footprint. Ripping out the old cabinets, and the soffit above them, allowed a new, extra row of cabinets (ten in total!) to run right up to the ceiling. Moving the microwave below deck (it is positioned between the stove and the refrigerator) freed up counter space. The addition of several roomy drawers below the counters also allows small appliances, bulky pots and pans, and clutter to be stored out of sight. To keep the budget on track, the designers installed a mix of custom sapele cabinets and off-the-shelf white Ikea ones.

With only one window in the kitchen, and no room to add in more, the designers turned to finishes to help lighten up the dim space. White cabinet doors, pale Caesarstone countertops, under cabinet lighting, a brushed steel backsplash, and new stainless steel appliances all help reflect light and brighten the enclosed area. The result is a refreshing, modern kitchen where everything has a place.
