Thanks to Kitchn reader Jae of the blog Design OCD for sharing her kitchen makeover with us! Jae tells us a little more about the process:
We remodeled our kitchen by gutting and removing everything. It is so much more functional now and really a joy to be in. We saved money by reusing most of the appliances (only purchased a new dishwasher) and by going with the same company for both the cabinets and granite counter tops. We did all the 'easy' work, like painting, ourselves.

Straw Mat from The ...

Oh. I'm surprised to see new cabinets. I thought the old ones looked pretty good.
Unless there was something wrong with them that we can't see in the photos, they just look like they needed new hardware, paint, and a few other adjustments (I'd have taken out the vertical crossbeams in the top open cabinets, removed the decorative panel over the sink...).
The after certainly looks nice, I'm just not convinced they needed to do all the work they did.
Congratulations on the makeover, you did a great job!
Although I'm not too sure about the pendant lamp over the sink...I would have gone with maybe a barn style pendant. Or maybe a glass globe like the ones from West Elm? Hmm.
Fantastic.
And I love the way the before pictures were photo-shopped - it makes it really easy to see the work that was done.
What a great re-do! It looks really nice, clean and much more open and functional.
@AKAY - I'm guessing they "needed" to do what they did because they wanted to?
That looks great, but I would suggest removing the piece of blue painters tape that was left on the crown moulding...
It looks nice, but I would need more lighting, like under the counter, for work spaces.
The cabinets were probably rickety and not well made. The ones in my kitchen looked fine, but once we started what were supposed to be minor repairs, their many flaws and unstable construction emerged. The only thing I would have kept were the open top cabinets -- I'd have put glass doors on them. I LOVE the little end display -- so cute! Wish I could work one into my kitchen when makeover time comes.
I really love the brightness and openness of this kitchen reno! Smashing job!
Wonderful job. As someone with a kitchen screaming for a reno this is very inspiring! I don't even like small mosaic tile but I am digging your backsplash!
great job. The other kitchen was atrocious
