Ah, that awkward space above the kitchen cabinets — you know the one. In the past we’ve discussed using baskets or a bit of eye-catching wallpaper to fill the void. Still uninspired? Here’s one more idea to add to the list: hang a shelf there!

One of the biggest problems Danielle — who works as the senior director of communications at One Kings Lane — had with her small kitchen was (surprise, surprise) not enough storage. The only truly available space was the area above the kitchen cabinets. Well, that would have to do!

With the help of OKL’s special projects editor Megan Pflug, they added a simple wooden shelf above the cabinets using four modular wine racks as supports, then painted the shelf and racks the same shade of white as the existing cabinets (“White Dove” by Benjamin Moore) to unify the look.

The result? “This easy addition nearly doubled her shelf space along that wall,” Megan notes in this post on One Kings Lane — and gave us a great idea in the process!

The only downside we see is that items stored above kitchen cabinets are prone to accumulating dust and grease, so keep that in mind. Frequent wipedowns would no doubt be a necessity, but likely worth it for the extra storage space.

What do you think? Have you done something like this in your kitchen?
