- What makes your small kitchen so cool?
- The friends who gather in it to enjoy good food and wonderful conversations... ten people can sit around my table when it's open!
- Describe a challenge you've overcome or a smart resource you've found for your kitchen.
- Figuring out where to place a (relatively) big table was a bit of a challenge. In the end, I built a bench for the table that took advantage of the weird shape of the room, and wrapped yarns around it, inspired by this post: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/5-projects-to-t-148094.
Also, my kitchen (like most German kitchens) came only with a sink and a stove, so making it fit for cooking and hosting on a grad student budget wasn't so easy. Flea markets, DIY projects found on the internet and Ikea were great resources!
- What's your favorite meal to cook here?
- This changes weekly! The last meal I've cooked for friends almost systematically becomes my new favorite!
Still, one constant factor this summer is this fantastic pie dough recipe which I've used several times for both sweet and savory pies: http://lookimadethat.com/2009/09/09/tomatogalette/

Small Cool Kitchens
I love this! Not fancy, not trendy, just cosy and welcoming. I can totally see myself spending lazy sunday afternoons drinking tea with friends there.
In short, if I lived in such a cool city as Berlin, this is exactly how I'd like my kitchen to be!
did you buy or make the ceiling lights!?!? i'm totally in love.
Thanks for the nice comment, Swisscheese, I really appreciate it!
J&H, I did make the ceiling light! It's actually quite easy to make, you mostly just need some mason jars. The first time I made a lamp, I was a bit nervous about it, but it turns out it's actually very easy, you just need to try it!
Swisscheese, I totally agree! Except for the tea, I'd take some coffee :-)
I don't know why, but this kitchen is so typical Berlin, I can't tell. If the spirit of a city can be visible in one person's room, than it is this little Berlin kitchen. Fantastic!
I love your 'yarn bomb' bench and the 'If you can't stand the heat...." art. And the lights, and your clock......
Great use of space and open shelving that makes sense. One of my favorites!
I LOVE the shelves...they're IKEA, right? Do you happen to know the model name of them?
Thank you everybody!
Kayeasy, yes, the shelves are indeed from Ikea; they're part of the Värde series and each is sold for 39.99$ in the US.
I could live here.
Love the character of you kitchen! Also like the your green pops of color and plants, gives it a nice organic feel!
I love the fact that this is both a kitchen and dining area. The bench is really cute, love the plants and I'm jealous you have a washer.
Amazing job! So warm!
If this was my kitchen I would live in it. I can just see myself with some tea ( and a slice of cake) at the kitchen table gazing out of the window, regardless of the weather, prepping my meals there, reading, surfing, chatting. Sigh. Love it!
knew from the moment your entry came in, you'd be the one to beat! keep climbing!!
Wow, everybody, thank you! I cannot believe how nice all of your comments are and how many of you favorited my kitchen!
