If you're thinking about throwing a holiday party, but don't want to invest in cheesy, Christmas-y decor, greens are the answer. Greens are a chic and simple go-to for all kinds of occasions. Jars of filler greens from the florist make a lush statement, as do tropical ferns. But if I'm in the mood for something even easier, a garland is a tabletop trick I revisit time and time again.

The best thing about a garland is the simplicity of dealing with one large centerpiece as opposed to several individual items. Laid atop a white cloth or bare wood table, a garland makes makes a big statement with very little fuss.

And it looks even nicer dressed up with another easy favorite: candles!

All you need to do is place your garland in a snake-like arrangement and nestle candles in the gaps. Tea lights in votives make for an elegant ambiance and set the mood with a single match (or two). Or, try tapered candles to give the setting taller layers.

Your table will look like a forest of green and glistening light, and who's not in the mood for that?
